5 to 10 years from now. The technology is in its infancy and still has a lot of stuff to overcome.

they are still far away and there are more and more hurdles coming every day with the introduction of led lamps for example. it might never make it to market. why do you want it anyways? maybe we can help there.

The basic principle is rather simple thankfully. It really is just rapidly flashing light and a light censor.

if you can buy a 20 year old laptop you can transfer files using light. IR on laptops were fun.

I was interested for personal reasons. The only reason I have these days for such a thing would be for secure wireless transfer of information when a line can't be layed down but I need to transfer something with a method that doesn't transmit wireless signals throughout the vacinity.

As for the IR sensor thing, It isn't the same thing. However, it is fun I'll admit that.
