Possible 1080 Ti Announcement at CES

There's really not much to say here, but i guess now would be a pretty good time for a 1080 Ti to appear, I don't plan on upgrading from the FE 1070 so i'm happy where i am in gaming. I guess if you need to make it different from the titan x somehow, just use good old regular GDDR5 instead.

so this is actually a rumor from the chinese forum baidu but it does come from the poster who has had some pretty good information about the 980 ti and was accurate for the most part.

it is in chinese but using a translator and inferring from it for better structure and meaning, this is what the poster says about the 1080 Ti and some other information related

Doesn't make any sense with it supposedly coming with GDDR5 and not GDDR5X when the regular 1080 even has GDDR5X.

Lol. I said it whenever HBM even came out that it was super overpowered for current gaming applications and still is. It's more of a gimmick right now.

For 4k gaming it would help but it doesn't necessarily need it. It's just odd that it would supposedly come with the non-X version when the lower end model comes with the X version.

I still side with Patrick and believe they need to throw away HBM for Hybrid-Memory-Cube.  HBM is inferior in every way to it now.

So far, yes. Expect more from AMD with Vega but NVidia probably won't release to much info on Volta for another few months

HBM is still all the rage and it HBM2 is coming to Volta. The Teslas already use it.

Except the fact that games don't benefit from them [true, we don't know about HMC but considering they don't benefit from HBM I doubt they will benefit from HMC (here come the latency comments)].

It might. Otherwise the memory bandwidth will be a little low (probably ~400 GB/s) for what it needs.

Well, i suppose it is compelling, but, its too early to purchase one tough :D...

 

Only later that year and with a hybrid version, i could potentially get it, but otherwise, nope :/.

 

Also, not that GDDR5 vs GDDR5X makes an enormous difference, but some people will look at the 1080 and say... what da fak? It has better memory? But, but which one is better then, it makes no sense that an inferior card has something superior to the "semi-extreme" tier card!?

 

Doesnt seem like Nvidia would make such a "rookie" mistake, would they?

I don't think the bus size difference will matter that much with the speed between GDDR5/X - it being supposedly bigger on the 1080 Ti doesn't mean it would have faster data transfers necessarily as the "bottleneck" would mostly be the actual speed of the memory.

I don't think either of us know enough about GPU's to make that assertion... but I don't see any reason why a wider bus vs faster memory would make any real difference. everything a GPU does is highly parallelized... it should scale about the same either way.

The bus size is mainly a bunch of lanes for the amount of memory that you have. The bus on the 1080 and the supposed 1080 Ti (according to the specs in the OP) shouldn't matter for raw speed, it's just there for the memory size. The rate of which the data comes to and from the GPU's memory will mostly be determined by how fast the memory is to begin with.

 

This is also why I say HBM/2 is mostly a gimmick since it has a gigantic bus and speed yet no game will (or even can) take advantage of it.

pretty sure you don't know enough about GPU structure, purpose, or operations to make a statement like that. I also don't know enough about them to tell you you're wrong or why though. from my understanding, bandwidth is bandwidth. the GPU or its workload isn't likely to discriminate where that comes from.

HBM (again, from my understanding) is unnecessary because current GPU power cannot keep up the the bandwidth headroom. similar to how most systems experience very little gaming scaling when you get faster memory (such as DDR4 2133mhz vs 3600MHz), but with a powerful enough system you DO begin to see performance scaling... you just need the horsepower to get there first.

Pretty sure you can say that about any hobby someone has and makes any recommendation or statement about what they use every day.

I can say that, and it typically has one of two outcomes.

1. They tell me I'm wrong and properly educate me (and, in this case, the rest of this thread) about exactly how something works.
2. They're too prideful or ignorant to understand their gossiping/meandering only increases the already excessive amounts of misinformation already on the internet, and they come up with some lame retort rather than accepting that they just don't know what they're talking about, and that they should not be having this conversation.



All I'm trying to say is that neither of us are knowledgeable enough in this area to make any strong assertions so we should avoid making them lest we embarrass ourselves, or worse, spread misinformation to another.
