What's the point?

Something that I don't quite understand, and this is NOT meant to 'bash' anyone, belittle, or insult anybody, I don't get why anyone would need some of the truly extreme rigs out there. Things that are cutting edge like the 6900k and better with TitanXs in SLI. Again, not meant to insult anyone's desire to go extreme, just a curiosity. I'm working with a higher-tier i7 (6700k) with some pretty decent hardware, and I'm getting exemplary results when gaming on "2k" with graphics maxed out. That being said, I imagine I wouldn't have to change too much to max out on 4k (likely bump up to a Titan X or GTX 1080). I only spent about $1200 USD for everything in my rig, so I don't get the $1800+ price tags on some of these systems out there. I understand watercooling has it's own costs, excluding personal labor for bending tubes and forming the system plus the maintenance, but why would you need dual Titan Xs or 1080s in SLI with 3 or 4 1tb SSDs? I mean, your performance on any game is maxed on 4k with 1 Titan X, right?

 

I've watched guys like Jayz2cents, Linus, and Luke build some pretty insane rigs, I just don't understand where the application is. I also don't do any content creation, so my comprehension of how many resources that takes up is simply non-existent. Just a friendly discussion y'all, out of curiosity.

If I was rich I would build the most overkill system possible, some people spend heavy money on weapons, cars, sports stuff, every one has a hobby, building highest end pcs is just one of those

Not everyone uses their rigs to game. some of them pay bills with their respective machines. Others (besides the ones @deXxterlab97 pointed out) are just impatient and want to render video or transcode as fast as possible.

 Just for gaming $1200 is a pretty silly sum to spend to most, at least outside PC gaming circles. It's peoples hobby, compared to keeping a classic car running a pair of watercooled 1080s is cheap.

This kinda ties back to my post about overspending on hardware. Again, if you have the funds then by all means go for it--it just personally urks me when someone would rather throw money away into synthetic benchmarks when real world performance doesn't reflect on money spent.

 same reason people buy 50k Cars its just they for some reason want it. obviously there is typically very little need above and Current i7 and 1080.

 

But crazy things like HUGE SSD massive HDD in a expensive case to show off the build water cooling cable sleeves  RGB Lighting  Mechanical Keyboards Gaming mice  ect

 

Theres a lot that can blow past a $1800 build that isnt actually needed But i do agree with some people spending more on the unnecessary things i mean if im spending that amount on a PC i want it to be nice and exactly but nothing crazy because it just deprecates so quickly.  Mice keyboards and moinitors dont but the PC Parts do

That's my biggest issue. I might be able to see the point of buying nice peripherals - audiophile headphones, top-tier keyboard and mouse, but the components become sub-grade in 4-5 years ... if that. I don't think the PC becomes unusable, but a lot of PCs made today (most probably) aren't bulky enough to run VR, which has already hit the market. So how long until folks need to replace their elite PCs before the next big thing comes out? It's just a lot of cash to throw at the mirror just to keep up with the bleeding edge. Way more than what's needed to run anything that the current market produces.

 

Also, future-proofing only goes so far. I'd say beyond 5 years you can't protect yourself enough with high-end investment and computer design. We either get a brand new gen of CPUs or the next huge step in GPU technologies that require a new set of higher bases needs.

I was comparing Coke instead of Walmart brand. I know someone who works in the factory for packaging on tons of food and the same contents goes into 8 different packages. From off brand to really expensive ones.

Even in 4k, What's the most a game like Battlefield 1 or Doom will allow for (Top end)? Is it even worth having 2 cards to reach that level of play? Also, how much do we visually see in framerates above 70?

 

My concern is that we'll hit a point where we can't physically see a difference in performance - the outer limits. I'd like to know what those are for specific games and content creation suites. Like what specs you need to render a quantity of data in a given time. Metrics, I suppose you can say. I feel these are different from benchmarks in that they're not analyzing the system, but more what the application needs to execute at a given rate.

 

It's at the max level which I guess I'd call it good. No need to invest any more into the rig. That's probably why I stopped where I did, though.

I regularly get 150 - 200FPS in DOOM and BF4. Combined with 144Hz it's the only way to play. 

 

Can't go back to 60Hz or anything under 100FPS~ for that matter. Would probably throw up. 

 

I've ran with two cards longer than i have had one card. If i bought the Titan X, i'd get another. I have the PCI-E lanes, the power, the space and the cooling capacity for two. One card doesn't look as good. These two 980s that i have (for now) are the fastest dual 980s for GPUPI 1B (link) All about the bragging rights. The close minded view that a "gaming" PC is just for games is just silly. So much more potential.

Yeah I used to think this was nonesense I actually had a delightful time playing the x360 because my pc was just a core 2 duo back then and it didn't have any difference in performance, I would always be pretty sure as long as it runs you're having all the fun you can have with it though now that I have finally finished my 2560x1080p beast and am running on 75hz I can clearly see the high differences from lower graphics 30fps, I am pretty certain the day I try out 4k and or 144mhz I will eventually see it as well now all more reason to save the money and avoid getting spoiled too son

It'll get to the point where you'll be able to know what's displaying 60Hz vs 144Hz. The difference is quite crazy. 

 

4K + 144Hz would be my dream some day. Would probably need to ditch the 980s to meet the frame rate target though. Maybe two Titan X Pascals are required......
