LG is taking a 4K HDR monitor and an Ultrawide to CES 2017

Guest

LG has seen an increasing popularity in the market of displays from phones all the way to jaw-dropping televisions

The company has announced that they will showcase new monitors that will surely entice consumers with the latest technologies available

The monitors will appear in the next Consumer Electronics Show which will happen from January next year (less than a month away)

The first model they would like to introduce is the 32UD99, a 4K HDR IPS monitor with USB-C

Already an industry leader renowned for integrating cutting-edge technology into its premium, high-resolution monitors, LG Electronics (LG) is pushing the industry to the next level with plans to introduce a HDR-compatible 32-inch UHD 4K monitor at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month.

The company has also stated what specific HDR standard they utilize which is nice to see

Quote

To stay one step ahead of the rapid proliferation of HDR content, LG’s 32-inch UHD 4K monitor (model 32UD99) with 3840 x 2160 pixels supports the HDR10 standard, which delivers enhanced brightness levels and a wide color gamut image. Compatibility with the HDR10 standard increases the monitor’s peak brightness, enabling users to edit movies and photographs much more comfortably.

The second monitor they will introduce is the 34UM79M, a chromecast-enabled Ultrawide monitor designed as a "multimedia" monitor

At CES 2017, LG will also be showcasing the 34-inch 21:9 UltraWide™ Mobile+ Monitor (model 34UM79M). The 34UM79M is the world’s first Chromecast-enabled multimedia monitor, allowing users to seamlessly stream their favorite movies, music, games and more from mobile devices directly to the monitor.

The more interesting bit about the Ultrawide monitor is the Dual Controller feature which enables users to switch between the PC and mobile device using a single screen

This means you will be able to adjust the monitor's settings using your mobile device so adjusting settings using buttons on the monitor won't be necessary

I have become a fan of LGs monitors and televisions because of the sheer amount of features they pack and the sleek designs they utilize

I would honestly like to see more monitors utilize the technologies that they're bringing forward to enable the market to be a tad bit more crowded

Man Samsung dropped the ball so hard. Releasing an ultrawide Quantum Dot monitor without HDR.

Well nice to see LG taking up the challenge. Supporting HDR10 should include 10 bit and wide colour gamut as well, which is really nice. Now if only LG would make a curved ultrawide with HDR10 support, then my wallet would be ready.

Løl good luck with that. The Gsync module is 1-200€ alone. OLED is bad for monitors, so you won't see that cheaply ever (unless they fix burn in/retention).

Isn't it redundant to say UHD 4k? I understand DCI 4K as there is also DCI 2K but there is no UHD 2K.

Might as well make it a TV at this point.

With USB-C it seems to be an offshoot of their contract to make displays for Apple.

So I wouldn't expect a wallet friendly price tag that their displays are typically associated with.

They've had USB Type C in a number of other monitors. I think it just makes sense. It's just moving the USB hub along with the times.

1080i SLi could do it and a 1080 alone can get higher than 60fps@4k in certain games like Doom.

The third review I read showed significantly better numbers, however most games still seem to absolutely shit the bed when it comes to frame dips.

yes it would, maybe not in all games at max, but a lot of games at medium high settings should be possible. A single titan X(P) can do pretty well in 4k, getting above 60 FPS in a lot of games at ultra settings. Just look here.

A single Titan X (P) should be able to do tomb raider at 4k medium settings and get 120fps. It would also be able to max out CSGO at 4k and get well above 144fps.

Of course they aren't going to hit 144hz, but manufacturers seem to skip up to 144hz with refresh rates(not sure why this is). I could have said "I wanna see a 4k with 100+hz refresh rate" but how many Monitors do you see above 100hz that aren't 144hz? Basically anything that can hit above 60fps at 4k (which is definitely available) will benefit from a 4k 144hz monitor.

They took almost 2 years to actually release the UM95, the very first 3440x1440 ultrawide that started all the hype. TWO YEARS from it's initial unveiling at CES.

I am not holding my breath this time. That wait time was miserable and just lead to moderate disappointment with it's QC and average build.

Displayport 1.3/1.4 can do 4k 120hz. The practical difference between 120hz and 144hz is basically a rounding error
