CPU 90c, how long will it last?

Mick Naughty

So I reverted my spare rig back to air cooling. Hoping to sell some other parts along with some testing again.

Anyway i left the water cooled oc's on everything.

3770k on auto oc. 103 on the clock and 41 multiplier. So 4.223 or something like that. According to precision x it's at 103c on bf1. Doesn't crash or anything. Reverted back to stock auto clock of 3.9 and the game will crash but it would be at 70-80c. I know precision x reads the CPU temp about 10c higher then all my other software.

So being too lazy to go get a decent air cooler, what's the worst case scenario? Prolly only gonna spend about 10-15 hours at the oc'd load while I test some stuff.

At that temp the cpu should last 10+ years, your mobo is much more likey to fail. CPU's are hard to kill.

As in my mobo is more likely to fail because of the temps or in general in comparison to a CPU?

In general in comparison.

At 85C you're still not caving into your CPU's life but I wouldn't do over 90.

Both, but even with those temps it should last years. I have had laptops that ran that hot and left them under max load for weeks.

Why are you running a stock cooler? Don't you have anything better for the time being? Also, at 103 Celsius, chip degradation can start, so leave it at stock.

Its just what he has while he tests some stuff. He is only doing 10-15 hours of OC testing and then hes sending it back to stock speeds. He is asking for that time if it will damage anything. Probably not, but it could.

Had a h100i but gave it to a friend. Also it isn't really at 103c like I said. I don't air cool so I don't have anything better.

I got my CPU this summer. I ran it for a while at voltages where it hit 85C sometimes for several hours at a time (rendering). 4.5 GHz @ 1.3V was stable when I first got it. It's not anymore. That's a sign of hardware degradation. It might be something else causing it to be unstable though.

No idea, don't even think I have it installed on this rig. I don't use that any more. Seeing in how it ran completely fine and at the oc I used on water I didn't see anything. The stock settings may have some kind of issue but I didn't look into it.

Like I said just the game is crashing, not the system. With the 4.22 oc its fine but the 3.9 "boost" the game crashes. The very cpu intensive bf1. Ill just put the oc back on and just watch it.

Sounds like the chip may have weakened a little over time.  While I don't think it happens as much as people fear, it does happen.  It may just require a bit more voltage than stock at stock clocks and boost.  No biggie.

Either. CPUs are pretty tough to kill.

That being said, being lazy is probably your issue--set a manual oc instead of relying on auto. Leaving the core voltage to auto will usually mean higher than necessary voltage and thus higher temps.

Think it peaked at 1.392. It it's at 83c in bf1 with sli on. Seems to stuck at 3.9xx ghz with both cards on and they are down clocking too. May give up while I'm ahead an throw the loop back on already.

That voltage is very high for stock. You should be able to run stock settings with 1.15v-1.2v if not lower.

Well it isn't stock. its on the auto oc.

That voltage is high in any case without liquid cooling or the best of air cooling. Leaving voltage at auto is only recommended with stock settings.

Tweak your oc and voltage manually instead. 4.1ghz is pretty low and 1.2v is usually enough.

Set the clock back to 100.00, and the multiplier to 42 and voltage to 1.200.

Just played a full round of bf1, max cpu temp was 71c. I did turn sli off as I don't think I could get full utilization on two cards on 1080p.

Should be able to try it in other games that aren't as cpu intensive. Thx for the help though, I never touch oc's normally, not cpu ones anyway.
