Mega.nz hacked by hackers, stole source code and admin login credentials

“We have been digging into some Mega developers account and started to escalate into their systems. We plan to release all the proprietary source code for public analysis,” [said the hackers]

 

“This is around 2 GB of source code, including the Mega Chat source code and other services

apparently they got in through the blog and help center

“One of our contractors working on independent systems to maintain the public material on our blog and the help center has been compromised,” Hall told TF.

“This person did not have access to user data, neither does the person have access to critical source code and so the impact is very low.”

 

However, since Mega.nz encrypts the data before it gets to their serves, Mega is confident that all user data as well as login data is secure.

Mega is still doubling down on their claim that no sensitive content was accessed or changed

honestly, I'm not too worried about my 50 gigs of porn that I have on Mega being decrypted, but I am a little wary about my username and password, though no more than any other site I trust with my username and password (no matter if it's unique or a throwaway one)

To be honest, Mega's statement seems much more credible and sensible than the article, which just buzzes "Mega has been hacked in some unspecified way! Because some hackers told us so. And they have some, mm, stuff. Probably."

If what Mega says it's true (someone broke into a contractor's system), then there isn't really any news. Especially because Mega's source code, the only specific thing the attackers claimed to have, is made public once finished anyway.

I agree, Mega can't directly access your private key I don't think.  So unless the hackers broke the encryption algorithm then they wouldn't be able to access sensitive data unless Mega was stupid af and made private keys public which essentially ruins the point of a private key in this context.

It's one of the better sites to download from, and the only one that doesn't spam you with ads when trying to download something, while still providing decent download speeds.

 

Of course people use it. It's a very good site.

Mega is brillant and easy to use. It runs in every browser well and looks appealing too. I love it and their apps on IOS and such are very well made. Also 50gbs free

Hopefully Mega survives trough this well, altough its probably not something that should worry its users. It could be well a bunch of random spanzies trying to get flashy reputation trough trying to beat one of the best download and upload websites online. I say this is one of those "boosted animal hackers" attempt to get attention, falling downhill at warp speeds.

Um, yes. I have been using it for years. Literally since the start. It is a great service and it puts Dropbox to shame.

oh them.  I hate that site, every time there's a download from there it's a massive pain since it does some weird hack to transfer it into the chrome program folder rather than just downloading normally.  Good riddance as far as I'm concerned.

You can download normally if you follow the correct buttons. Its literally one extra click.

Good riddance to 50 gbs of free storage? 

I love their services and their UI is much more elegant than many other things. Just takes a minute to realize there's 2 download options

What do you use? I've found other cloud based storage services make you jump through loop holes for storage space. I like Mega cuz it's 50gb of storage with no loops or games.

You didn't read the article... They weren't "hacked" and they are not going anywhere. Also, Mega is a great service. I could name countless reasons why it's better then shittier options such as Dropbox... Etc.

I guess I have both google drive and onedrive (5x1TB  came with office 365) which stores some automatically backed up data that I don't care about anyway, but I don't have much need for cloud storage or file sharing outside of work (which we use other systems for), I use custom fileservers for all my home data and backups.

haha.. glad i didn't move my stuff to mega and kept it all on google drive..

and now its off of google drive, and onto my nas.
