BCLK on Haswell was tied to many other systems and was more restricted whereas BCLK on Skylake was largely remote.

In some games, yes. Given you will play only those type of games, which most don't. Get (almost) any AAA game and it's game over. You want to pair that 1050Ti/460 with a 6400 or a 7350K if they are $5 in difference? Given no one will pull out a Far Cry 4.

 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

BCLK OC required a external clock generator to bypass Intels forced BIOS "lockdown".

thing is. for your average gamer, this is perfect.
Games like WoW and other MMOs/MOBAs are so excessively single threaded that clock speed + IPC > cores. However OCd i3's are able to play even demanding AAA titles like TW3, GTA V etc without shitting themselves. unlike normal dual cores. The i3 6100 OCd actually beat the i5 6400. Primarily due to the extemely low clocks of the i5.

We know that Anandtech is only using a TE, aka extremely low power SKU. We also know that Digital Foundry hit 4.4GHz on their i3 6100. Thus imagine how things would look if the ALREADY slow i3 that i showed in the pictures in the spoiler was even faster still?

It can still be a 30 FPS difference but that's with the game still running in 40-50 FPS to be honest. Or unless the games are RoTR, Rys and few others. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Its harder to OC the 6400 and 6100 these days. My point is THESE WILL BE OBSOLETE IF THE NEW KABYLAKE SKUs HIT THE MARKET.

 

Also, prebuilts. Low cost "overclocking" prebuilts that you just hit a "turbo button" and all of a sudden you got massive performance increases?! that is very potent setup.

I know I know what your point is, imo it's better to give those $25 more for i5 but hey that's me. I mean better to have OC i3 than not, but I mean if you're going for ocing, it might be better to go a step up. I like the ides of prebuilds with OC i3, however I have a feeling that won't happen, at least it will be very rare. Not really worth it for companies to focus on that as well on cheap prebuilds.

It doesn't make sense. Would rather buy a Skylake i5 (You can get the 6500's for $180 in the US from most retailers) and be fine. If you absolutely needed the clock speed, you could technically go the old ASrock Z170 BIOS route as well. Not only that, but the 6600k also goes on sale for $200 on Newegg depending on promo deals. All around better investment, since there are no IPC improvements at all coming from Kaby. 

 

If this was still a $120 SKU, then by all means, this would be fantastic, or maybe $150 at absolute most, but it's priced way too close to real quad cores for it to be considered a great value.

If the rumors about Kaby using solder on the die's are true, and this thing clocks as well as it's bigger brothers, then maybe it's worth the premium, but only in a very niche view. i3's still work for gaming, so in a low heat ITX situation, I could understand it. I just don't see the average user needing a highly clocked i3, over a stock i5. HT is not magic after all.

It was also only $50-$70. Was great for amateur overclockers to learn the trade, while only risking a $50-$75 CPU. This CPU is (rumored) to be more than twice that price. As I said before, $150 is the highest this CPU can be priced, without being completely overshadowed by the i5's. At $175, the difference between this i3 and an i5, is only $5.

I overclocked my G3258 to 4.4 GHz on the stock cooler with a $50 crap H81 board that couldn't go above 1.2V vcore.

I haven't seen many G3258's that couldn't hit at least 3.9GHz, though.

I don't see it very revolutionary: $177 essentially covers the entire pre-Zen AMD range, where unlocked is the norm and locked is the exception. Yes, I understand the architectural advantages and all that, but an unlocked dual core CPU at FX-8350 prices is hardly a revolution, more like a marginal addition to the spectrum.

Well that would explain the price increase if true but I agree that the i3 and i5 prices are too close to be worthwhile

there was a bios tweak made availbe that removed that code but kept everthing else by some 3rd parties.

for $180 you could get a true quad core. i know its overclockable, but its still iffy
