So it looks like another major DDOS attack is happening. This time it's causing multiple sites to be down by attacking a public DNS service.

Quote

Some of the world's biggest websites including Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify and Shopify are experiencing technical problems due to a reported DDOS attack.

Quote

“Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure,” major DNS host Dyn wrote in a brief post on its website. “Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.”

It looks like it's affecting some ISP's more than others.

Warner Cable subscribers on the East Coast likely still cannot access Twitter or Reddit, for example.

These attacks are getting crazy

Large dns service providers like Dyn tend to have a decentralized structure, your ISP likely goes via servers that haven't been affected significantly yet.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Twitter DNS down for me

Spotify just back up

Netflix's own cdn works but thumbnails and pictures which are hosted on AWS (afaik) don't show up.

And Netflix's www.fast.com doesn't work for me.

Is it just the DNSes that are down or are websites going down too? If it's just DNSes then use some other one in the meantime.

From what I've been reading, it seems that the attack is DynDns infrastructure which is the DNS provider for most of these large companies. So I believe it's just the DNS

Based on the reports it's just DNS servers going down. Time to spin up my private DNS servers and increase the caching time on them to avoid being impacted by this mess. :)

There was a post about this on r/programming or something, yeah it's just the DNS. I use the google DNS anyway, as I've had some issues with DNS in the past.
