Considering you plan to get high end AMD cards in the future, probably $200 doesn't matter much to you anyway, get the 290X for now, unless you don't mind paying $330 for RX480, then do that, you can always resell it in the future.

Hi guys,

I live in Brazil, and the prices here are ridiculous. A RX 480 8GB costs nearly $400, the 4gb version costs $330. But, i have the opportunity to buy a 2.5 year old "reference" R9 290X for $200. Do you guys think it's worth it? Or maybe the $330 brand new RX 480 is a better option?

They perform about the same.

I'd get the 290X for cheaper though $200 is still alot for that card actually and being a reference design, expect a hot and loud card...

Of course pricing varies by location.

I'd go with the 480. The 290X reference was bad cooler-wise.

It's just temporary, until they release a R9 490 or 490X

That depends on what you're looking for. You are getting a much, much better value with that R9 290X, but in the end, the RX 480 is the better card.

Do you think that the price difference is worth it for the 480?

I know, but the best bang for the buck would be the 290x, right? I saw some review and they perform about the same.

$330 for 4GB and $400 for 8GB is simply ridiculous though.

What do you have now?

If you can live with it then just wait.

Both 290X and 480 is overpriced where you live.

The 480 is a cooler card and requires less power from your PSU. And knowing some of Brazil, your ambient temp is likely about 40-50C.

That's a better option for a temporary card.

Though of course it will perform a little worse than the RX480/R9290X.

My vote would go to the 290X at this point.

Any reason why you only consider AMD side?
