I'm bored and want to mess about with this but want to know if you think it will be worth my time first. so the maximum recommended length of a hdmi cable is 15m (50ft) but if I say wanted to say use a monitor in another room would I be able to jerry rig an Ethernet cable to take a HDMI signal since you can take a cat6 cable 100m (325ft i think.)

I lurk a lot

Cat6 is different. HDMI will still only go 15m, and needs more wires than a cat6 IIRC.

There are 2 ways to do this

1. Over ip- You can use a remote desktop solution so put this down ip. It will be like any other network traffic.

2. Just using the cable. You need adapters like theesh https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Extension-Extender-200-Feet-HDMI-EXTC/dp/B001PT1A7C

No, that's not how it works.

A display cable is very different from a network cable.

You cannot just stick HDMI connector on the end of any cable and have it transfer video.

To transfer video over an ethernet cable you need to have two devices on either end, like two computers, and then have one stream to the other (like the steam link thingy or whatever its called) or the nvidia equivalent.

There are HDMI over Ethernet adapters though:

@peej that's definitely the easiest way to achieve your goals.

However, the article notes that in many cases, you might be better off just spending the extra money to get an Active HDMI cable:

http://www.howtogeek.com/112636/htg-explains-do-you-really-need-expensive-cables/

Active HDMI cables can go far longer than the normal 15m (although I don't know what that new limit is).

accept that entire project is about 700$... at that point its probably more cost efficient to buy another pc.

why do you need two computers?

I dont know, some guy up there said he needs two -shrugs-

If you also read the other posts, you'd see you can do this using two Ethernet Cables of the same length and an HDMI over Ethernet adapter.

The cables don't even need to be Cat6 - Cat5e cables will work just fine, up to 200ft or so, depending on the HDMI over Ethernet adapter you use.

@peej either get an HDMI to Ethernet adapter kit, or directly wire it in because you're 2 feet away.

@peej Theoretically, you could do that, but I doubt it would be a pleasant experience since every technology has its limits. You can try, but I don't think you're gonna have any fun doing so.

like i said i dont need to do it i just want to see what happens :P

You could try splicing some HDMI cables into some ethernet cables and see if that works. All you'd need to do is match the pins. You'd need 2x Ethernet cables, and a single HDMI cable - cut it in half, splice each half to the ethernet cables, and just make sure to carefully track which pins on which cable you use.

With that in mind, there's a chance this won't work. It depends on whether any active conversion is happening or not. I do not know, personally, whether the adapter is active or passive.

But if you've got an HDMI cable and 2 ethernet cables you can spare to lose, it's worth a shot.

yeah this is what i thought but then if you look at the photos of the adapters they look like they have a dc jack so i think there might be some form of active conversion

It might not be conversion - it might be a signal repeater. Since the reason why HDMI fails over 15m is signal degradation.

Either way, simply splicing the cables would not alleviate the problem, regardless of whether it's a repeater, or an active converter.
