gddr5x vs hbm2

Is hbm2 really that great cuz nvidia may implement it for the next gen gpu so I don't know if I should go for a gtx 1080 sli or just wait for a next gen gpu release.

The Tis are considered a next gen GPU.

Yeah, it's similar to how Haswell Refresh is considered a separate generation from the original Haswell.

The "big" Pascal chip (P100 / GP100) used in high performance computing was already mentioned it will use HBM2 by Mr.CEO himself during HTC 2016...

 

I don't see why they won't be using HBM2 in the next-generation GeForce GPUs.

Dude it likely won't be until up to 2 years before Nvidia may do something as big as 10xx series remember hardware right now IS FAR AHEAD software

They likely will implement HBM2 but will keep the pascal chips

AMD still has first dibs on HBM2 production (you know, since they pretty much designed it) so don't expect to see it in Nvidia consumer GPUs until at the earliest the next full generation (that would be the 1100 series, not the 1080 TI). AMD meanwhile will most likely use it on their flagship Vega GPU early next year.

 

I highly doubt you will see HBM2 on anything less than the flagship GPUs at all in the next year or two.

The chip used by GTX 1080 doesn't have a HBM2 controller built in.

The card that uses HBM2 uses different silicon, a chip with HBM2 controller.

 

HBM2 will come in stacks of 4 or 8 dies, so 4GB or 8 GB per chip. A proper video card will have 4 stacks, so at least 16 GB. This will make them expensive, basically add $50-100 to the price of a video card just because you have HBM2 memory.

 

HBM2 may not be as useful for video games, it's wide bus low frequency, while GDDR5x is low bus high frequency .. it's not necessarily higher bandwidth or more performance.

Well waiting for the 1100 series will mean at least a full year of waiting.

 

1080 SLI will be much faster than a 1080 TI, when it scales properly, and since we already know roughly where the 1080 TI will perform (about 10% less than the Titan XP based on the last gen cards) you could expect a lot more performance out of the SLI setup. 

 

But really, it depends on how long you want to wait. No one knows when the 1080 TI is coming. It could be many months and I'd honestly just go with a single 1080, or a Titan if you absolutely need the performance.

but I don't plan on upgrading in 5 years if I get a gtx 1080 sli but if I get 1080 TI I would be able to upgrade in 2- years time

I'd stay away from multi card setups pretty much universally unless you are just wanting to crush some benchmarks. Multi-card setups can be great in some games, but trash in others so it kind of depends what you play. Most indie or smaller titles won't support multiple cards very well, and even some AAA games do bad with them. Although there are also some games that benefit heavily from multiple cards, so that is really up to you.

 

I bought a single 1080 with the intent of upgrading sometime next year. I don't think I'd want 2 of these knowing that there is AMD's big cards and the 1080 TI coming up soon-ish.

You can't project what it will be like 5 years later.

 

For an example, the GeForce GTX 200 series came out in 2009.

5 years later, the GTX 980 / 980 Ti / Titan X came out (2014).

...like nobody uses a GTX 200 series graphics card anymore...it won't even meet MINIMUM requirements for games that came out in 2015 / 2016.

GDDR5X is already a 100% increase over GDDR5, while it doesnt cost much more to make which is why its more attractive.

 

HBM is more expensive.
