AMD has a lot of graphics and cpu IP's . If apple bought AMD , it would allow them to design their own processors in-house , instead of relying on intel for their desktops and laptops .

And both of the OP sources claim to be using THAT EXACT RESEARCH, so both of them were just wrong, and apparently can't read. Zmeul in this case is literally 100% on par.

Apple has been moving back to AMD products for the last 2 years because Intel refuses to underbid products just to keep Apple's buisness (just in the exact same manner all consoles are AMD, super low margins).

I only noticed Firepros at most, not AMD CPUs.

Well the cpu's are just way too inefficient ATM for use. I would expect that to change within the next year or so with Zen.

But basically all discrete gpu's in use in macs are AMD (like the mx295, the m390, etc etc). This is in stark contrast to the near 95%+ stranglehold Nvidia has on discrete mobile gpu's.

So my previous post should have read "Nvidia" instead of Intel, but I do expect Intel to follow suit shortly in being omitted from macs.

From mercury research

In what category and what time frame because I see them losing market share overall, breaking even in discrete GPU market and getting a 1% gain in mobile market

Any market share is good, but it needs to start rising significantly to earn them money they really need. Hopefully their new chips deliver.

I'm pretty sure this is actually Q2, not Q1, we're in Q3 now, and the Q1 report was published in Q2, as it always is. I remember seeing somewhere that this information is available to only industry affiliates' at the moment.

someone is fudging the numbers

well according to the numbers you,ve posted which seem legit, in the discrete GPU they gained nothing and they gained 1% in the mobile market:

So i don't know where that 4.8% claim come from but it doesn't seem right at all.

I always get confused by these releases... could this be another case where they are speaking specifically of "market share" of new sales? As a percentage of the market of GPU's that were sold over such and such a period. With the big new GPU putsch both makers have had and supply issues it could be that AMD had a higher percentage of total sales.

Yes they generally mean market share of current sales (or in this case Q1 2016), otherwise it would be next to impossible to notice changes in the %s due to just how many chips were sold in the past

Though as it has been pointed out in this thread the article is BS, and they actual change was nothing in the nvidia AMD war for GPUs, a 1% increase on the amd side in mobile gpus, and a loss by both companies against intel overall cuz igpus are still so common

That HardOCP article is a work of art. If you don't go and look up the sources you will get pretty confused. Anyways they are using Mercury Research and John Peddie Research. They are reporting in on Q1 and commenting also on Q2 which makes you think the report is on Q2.

Anyways the 4.8% seems to be from JPR press release here: http://jonpeddie.com/publications/add-in-board-report/

They're at their highest over the past 4 years, at $7.62/sha (highest over the past 5 years was $8.2/sha in March 2012)

This is actually good news, even if it's less than 10% of their all time high (92.25/sha in 2000)

If Zen pans out in favor of AMD we could even see their share price skyrocket for the first time in... forever...

furthermore, those are shipped units, not what they sold

but seeing how most of shops don't even have stocks, I'd say those numbers should reflect on actual sold units

maybe JPR has the actual sold units data
