Sleeving: Discussion and Gallery

PBaines

Hi, I'm having trouble removing the pins from the 24 pin connector on a Corsair CX600M. I am using staples and/or a flattened paperclip. I have been successful on another psu and the 8 pin cpu connector but not on the 24 pin. Does anyone have any suggestions why I cannot remove it?

Thanks.

Get a pair of pliers, and grab the pin 1mm above the plastic and push down, you don't want to bend the staple :)

I will be adding the staple method to the F.A.Q when I get a day off work!

In regards to that cable, maybe if you pulled all the wires apart you might be able too? As remember sleeve is circular so wouldn't work great with a rectangle haha.

That being said, you could probably use the MDPC-X sleeve/sata shrink which is pretty rectangular

SATA Shrink would be ideal.

I've seen plenty of crossfire/sli bridges that have utilized SATA sleeving.

This is fairly similar.

I saw someone a while back had braided there molex cables etc into one so it'll looked like it was a ribbed/ribbon cable, anyone know who it was?

Does this void your warrenty on your modular psu?

In my opinion, sleeveless shrinking can be really sexy, and it's quite easy to make.

Here is a tiny little guide.

First you will need a ruler or a good eye, a lighter, a cable to sleeve, sleeve(personally MDPC is the best), tweezers,

1) Get your wire and cut the sleeve(It's very important to make sure it is fully stretched so the weave closes) so that it is at the wings of the crimp.

2) Get a piece of heat-shrink(Again I recommend mdpc, but the only reason for this is it has an extremely thin wall, when I do it with shrink with a thicker wall it takes a lot longer to melt the sleeve) that is 3 centimetres give or take, draw a line halfway and place this over the crimp, line up the halfway mark with the end of the sleeve.

3) Taking your lighter, set it on fire till it is black and burnt, it's a learning experience, you don't want to go to hard and burn the insulation.

4) Wait 5 seconds and then pull of the heat-shrink with tweezers or something similar.

The benefit of this, if you measure right you won't have to see sleeve(Though don't get me wrong sleeve looks nice, sometime fans especially I feel it is out of place.)

Taking the cables out of the housings breaks most warranty, that's why I suggest making your own cables. Once you have the equipment it is really cheap, though you can buy bare cables from another site, not like they ask for the cables in warranty though. The other benefit of making them is you can have a perfect length cable.

How does @lutro0customs 's PET sleeving compare to the all mighty MDPC sleeve?

How many feet approximately do you need to order to sleeve a full power supply?

What tools do you recommend to an armature sleever?

The biggest difference is density. Teleios blows MDPC out of the water when it comes to ease of use and wire coverage while maintaining an easily trained cable. Basically you dont need to stretch it till your fingers hurt to get it to cover a wire.

Its easier to use, readily available in the USA, and lots more colors are coming soon!

Are there any good places in NZ to get everything you need to make your own custom length cables, or do you just get yours from overseas

I get all my tools/wring from http://lutro0-customs.com/

and then all my sleeving from http://en.mdpc-x.com/

I don't know of anyplace in NZ where you can get stuff for custom length cables..

Hope to get the F.A.Q started this weekend, it will be pretty big however. What would people like me to firstly do topics on?

But here are some pics of a clients build using some sleeved cables I did for him, it looks epic!

note; case is a powder coated Corsair 350D and he also is intending on watercoolint it all too :)

What tools, wire size, rough length of cable you would need (obviously you can be specifics but 5 metres or 10) and do and donts.

Would be a good start

Topics I think you should cover (in no specific order):

Tools

Wire gauges

Pin types

Crimping connectors

Soldering wires

Soldering connectors

Removing pins

Sleeving types (paracord, MDPC, etc)

Heatshink vs Heatshinkless

PSU pin outs (how to read a PSU voltage diagram)

Achieving good bends

Measuring correct lenghts

Resources (other guides, where to buy, etc)

Extension vs custom cables

There are probably others but this is off the top of my head.

WOW.

You guys know Snef? The guy who does the amazing build logs? Well it seem he uses darkside sleeve and apparently it is one of the most expensive sleeve out there.

It seems really nice looking but DAMN It costs 8 dollar or so for 33feet of Mdpc and it costs around 16.50 for 33ft of this darkside stuff.

Take a look http://www.dazmode.com/store/product/5_64_2mm_darkside_high_density_cable_sleeving_sand_yellow/ I'm not where the premium comes from but WOW That is just so expensive.

Not sure if this would be the right place to simply ask of such a thing, do certain places offer custom sleeved cables into the 4+ Colour range on let's say a 24Pin cable, that being a rainbow, would this then add convinience instead of having to buy all 7 colours seperate and doing them yourself? whilst at the same time saving money?, a build I've been thinking about for a while includes around 5 colours for the overall colour scheme going along with the actual theme of the build. Also been pondering would it be better to get the entire build modded professionally instead of doing it myself, minus the experience with the chance of cocking it up beyond repair.

If you were in New Zealand or didn't mind a delay  (probably about 2 weeks in total of shipping delay) I could do it for you, most places that offer sleeving wouldn't charge much more if not anything at all as sleeve is basically all the same price across it's spectrum, ie all MDPC-X sleeving cost the same I think.

If you were going to do a heatshrinkless job then sure you could attempt that yourself, however if you were going to do a heatshrink job, to put it bluntly it won't come out very good at all if you haven't had the experience. Which is why heatshrinkless is always recommended to first-time sleevers.

Depending on what you want to do to your case, MNPCTECH's youtube channel have some pretty good mod guide videos if you were wanting to do modding :)

Will start on those sleeving topics mentioned :)

Good luck on the first part mate, other side of the world (The U.K), I've been thinking about doing heatshrinkless but I may need to throw out my current PSU to even start off, even after that I'd have to do a complete different build switching to a Sabertooth etc, going off topic but you get the point, also another question to throw in there, does the colour cream exist within the sleeving world?

So how are the wires fixated in the PSU? I couldn't find a proper picture of a opened PSU.

Bit late but ta-da! Take of the 4 outer screws. (those grills are gold my camera settings where wrong)

DSCF1191.jpg

You can see the wires come in at the bottem left, soldered into the pcb.

DSCF1193.jpg

As to the dangers? Yes it is dangerous if you don't discharge the caps, but if your sleeving you won't need to take the pcb out as you can take the plastic ring out and get to the wires better.
