My next gpu may very well be AMD. Nvidia being sneaky?

First of all I want to thank the guys here who helped with my issue of stuttering of GTAV.  I did turned out to be an Nvidia driver issue.  I rolled back from the latest one to an older driver and it was buttery smooth again.

 

Does Nvidia really do this to get people to upgrade to their newer hardware?  Darn.

What are your experiences?

They fked up a whole family of drivers. But 2 months later, they fixed it.

 

So yeah, shjt happens with driver upgrades; that's not to say it's permanent, though.

No, both companies have driver issues from time to time. Neither of them are completely rock solid. I can guarantee that some people with AMD cards have experienced the exact same thing as you.

I guess you're right.  Perhaps I'll wait a few revisions down the line.  If it doesn't get better then I'm afraid accusations against them are right.

Yeah they do. I get way higher OCs on older drivers

Sometimes what happens is a new driver has a bug, and you fix it by reverting to the previous one, and wait to update for the next release.

Pretty much always it is no longer present in the next release.

What's nice about nvidia drivers is that they release so often you usually don't have to wait long for it to be fixed.

 

Also, when you have issues, it's often not like with AMD where your OS crashes, or you get a black screen, or your GPU overheats.

It's usually just some glitch with a program or artifact which you can easily fix by downgrading to the previous driver.

Its more fun when a driver causes your GPU to die from overheating while running World of Warcraft.

 

That actually happened, can't remember if it was Nvidia or AMD.

 

In before one of them releases a driver that causes immediate GPU implosion from running minesweeper.

They are both terrible but lately I seen such awful glitches on the Nvidia side, such as the GPU is stuck at 100% until you reboot the system or that the drivers just kills them self... :(

Both AMD and NVidia have issues with drivers from time to time.

 

RX 480 had stuttering issues in GTAV as well. It was fixed rather quickly so I bet NVidia will fix it soon as well.

Everyone have driver issues.

Just keep monitoring what drivers are you using and when you get crashes and problems.

If you have any kind of problems with graphics, just go back to older drivers. Doesn't sound like such a big deal to me.

That actually happened, can't remember if it was Nvidia or AMD.

 

In before one of them releases a driver that causes immediate GPU implosion from running minesweeper.

Nvidia had some of those drivers during 400 and 500 series. With several confirmed deaths of cards. It was fixed and users was reimbursed with new cards from what i know.

 

AMD recently had a driver (november last year) that limited GPU Fan speed to 20%. There was only ONE confirmed death that was replaced due to this and a million post frrom people trying to scam their way to a new GPU and or just throwing fuel at the fire for fun.

i only update my drivers like, every 2 months, and never update the moment a new one comes out

Needs money for car parts :P

Only had one issue in the year or so I've had my 960, the driver would just crash and reinstall the older version. I just waited for the next update and it worked fine again. Looking over the fence at what Team Red has to offer for my next GPU though ^^

True.

I have a knee jerk reaction when seeing an exclamation mark on the lower right side of the screen and clicking update right away.

 

Anyways, I have to wait before upgrading my gpu simply because the replacement I want is something in the caliber of Titan X (Maxwell).  I know the 1070 is out, but I'm waiting for the prices to hit $380.  I'm seeing a slight price decrease from AIB.  A Gigabyte G1 was $419.  However, I'm hoping the 490 or Fury, or Vega... whatever is AMD's higher end called, can help lower the price of the 1070.  I really don't want to spend more than $400-ish on a gpu.
