Alright guys. 5820k or 6700k for gaming

So a little background info. Had a 4590 and Asus z97a. Recently sold to a buddy of mine. 4590 was bottle necking my 1070ftw on my 144hz monitor. I will be heavy overclocking either one. I have a dark rock pro 3 and 4 high quality case fans. And price is almost identical. I will be buying the CPU and mobo+ram and the total cost is almost the same. It'll be 5820+ msi x99 sli Krait edition or 6700k Asus z170 Sabre tooth s.

It doesn't matter, for gaming they are very similar so I'd just pick whichever.

Save the money and buy an i5 unless you do a lot of video editing. Most games don't make use of lots of threads on the CPU.

My 4590 was bottle necking hard. I5s don't do well at 1080p@144hz

I swayed my friend away from a 6900k to a 6700k. He's much happier, especially since he saved about $1,100.

6700K unless you really need the extra performance in other situations.

i7 6700K. The higher single core performance is going to be favoured more in games.

There is not a large difference between the i7 6700k and 5820k http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-5820K/3502vs2579

 

+the i7 6700k will do in some games even better with higher single core performance

One thing you might want to consider is what chipset you want. If you want X-99 go with the 5820K (certainly a great chip, I got mine to overclock to 4.7GHz [although not many people get this sort of result]). On the other hand, if you want a different chipset or want to do a Mini-ITX build, the 6700K is pretty similar to the 5820K and will offer similar performance. I can say if I ever wanted to build a compact gaming PC I would use the 6700K for the Mini-ITX form factor. Either way it's still what will work best for you, past 4 cores for gaming won't do much, but if you are like me you will want that power for other stuff too and would prefer a 6 core CPU (especially for multi-tasking).

I'd go for 6700K.

6700K, though if it was a non-K, i5 then maybe an OC on the 6600K would help.

No the price of the 5820k and 6700k is identical at my local store so are two mobos I'm looking at

Yeah it was the non k version. Maybe I'll look at the 6600k vs 6700k fps wise at 144hz with a 1070

Certainly if you can afford it and do stuff that benefits from multi-threading like Video editing or animating or rendering then certainly a 5820K or 6800K or 6700K will do the job wonderfully.
