It's amazing how they make this claim, saying it "leaves the 10 series in the dust" without having any of the performance metrics. They assume "40% more cuda cores = much faster" and make bold statements without facts to back them up. Nvidia already came out and said the GTX Titan XP is "up to" 60% faster than the previous Titan X. The previous Titan X is only 20-30% slower than the GTX 1080. Transitive property dictates that the new Titan XP will only be 20-30% faster than the GTX 1080, using Nvidia's own information. 

 

Remember people. Core count does not scale linearly if clock speeds change. Something might have 40% more cores, but if there is even the slightest difference in clock speed, it will not automatically yield 40% more performance.

You must remember, it uses the exact same cooling. It will be far more bound to heat given its less overall headroom due to the additional heat brought on by having those extra cores. What happens when you raise the TDP of a product, but use the exact same thermal solution? It runs hotter. The 1080 already runs hot on the stock blower cooler. The Titan class cards have always been reference only. No custom AiB versions. Granted, the general consumer can slap a waterblock on them and go nuts, but thats only adding more cost to the mix. 

 

If we take it at face value, and compare the reference cards against each other, I simply do not believe this Titan XP will overclock well at all. In fact, I bet the opposite. I bet keeping it running at its stock boost without thermal throttling will be a miracle in and of itself. This is coming from a man that exclusively uses blower cards due to ITX cases.

Actually thats not true. The Titan XM actually had custom cards toward the end of its lifespan. And where did you see the 1080 runs hot? No it doesn't. Warmer than a custom card sure.

If we're lucky, EVGA will open up with an ACX 3.0 TitanXP.  If nVidia allow customs - they'll have a lot more adoption.  I'm still just going to wait for Volta, though, maybe get the Titan XP if an affordable 4K Oled appears in the next five months.

it hits the 82C "boost throttle" limit on stock fan curve. That's hot in my book. While a custom fan curve can fix this, it comes at an acoustical cost. That being said, the FE 1080's only hit those levels of heat after hitting 2000mhz OC's, so its perfectly acceptable. Again, this is a 180w package, using a 250w thermal solution. It has headroom to be overclocked. The Titan XP's will be extremely limited by the stock cooler (Similar to how previous Titan cards were). Do you have any links to an AiB Titan X that did not have reference cooling? I know custom coolers were sold separately that were compatible with the cards, but I never saw them sold as a single entity before.

But it will be the first card to be reasonable as a single card solution, just "high" and not "ultra" detail to get 60FPS. Still 4k high detail looks a lot better than ultra at even 1440p

Don't forget the 1080ti will come out in the future and it will run cooler, quieter and be faster when overclocked AIB designs are made for ~$900. I love how stupid the press is, did anyone see ars technicas headline "Nvidia unveils new GTX Titan X: 11 teraflops, 12GB GDDR5X, JUST $1,200" 

 

Looks like they just copied Nvidia's description of it and don't know what they are talking about like GDDR5X on a $1200 card is a good thing anyway.

And I do believe the old titans overclocked pretty well on stock coolers that werent even as good as this one.

 

I have to admit, I thought you were saying AiB had custom cards as in custom PCBs not just coolers.

Looks like they just copied Nvidia's description of it and don't know what they are talking about like GDDR5X on a $1200 card is a good thing anyway.

 

I would definitely like to see a 10 series Ti, but I'm not sure that we'll be getting one this go around.

And I do believe the old titans overclocked pretty well on stock coolers that werent even as good as this one.

I stand corrected. It's odd though, as I have searched and could only find EVGA doing this, or "sold separately" shrouds/water blocks. I do wonder just how much extra this will add to the cards already expensive ($1200) price tag, and how much additional performance will be obtained from it. Guess we will know come August 2nd, when people inevitably slap water blocks on the Titan XP.
