GTX 1080 worth extra $400 over the GTX 1070?

Logon98

Hey Guys,

I've been designing my first gaming PC and have been having trouble choosing my GPU. I have been tossing up as to which one to get. I have decided that I would like the Asus Strix version but cant decide between the 1070 and the 1080.

As I am in Australia the price difference is: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card for $869 and the other at Asus GeForce GTX 1080 8GB STRIX Video Card for $1259

To explain the uses of the card will be gaming at 1080p maxed out everything if possible on a 1080p 144Hz monitor. I basically want to "future proof" my build and was wondering if the $400 difference between the cards is worth it. I have looked at previous posts on Reddit and watched some videos/benchmarks online but haven't been able to decide. I can afford both cards but just don't want to waste money if I don't have to.

If you have the money and want the extra 30% or so performance, then go ahead yeah.  In terms of price to performance, the 1070 is most likely better

For 1080p, buy a 1070 and spend the other $400 on hookers and blow.

Well I would move to America first because that would be cheaper than buying PC parts in Australia.  Anyway, if you have the money then get the 1080 so it can keep up over 3 to 4 years instead of 2.  Either card will kill 1080p gaming even at 144hz so no problem there but if you want to upgrade to 1440p or 4k then definitely get a 1080 so you can kill everything at max settings. And 4k might need SLI 1080s if you want to murder it.

Maybe check out some benchmarks to see how the specific cards run each game that you will want to max out? Generally speaking, either card will be able to max everything at 1080p (but maybe not at 144+ FPS, depending), so probably better to save the money and pick up the 1070, it will still be immensely powerful.

Get the 1070, overall average performance is about 80% of a 1080. If you spend the money on a 1080, you might regret it when the 1080ti drops, and you will look at your 1080 and want to punch it.

As you play on 1440p 144hz, what could you say about gaming? I mean, can you max out the BF4? Batman Arkham knight? And some other new games?

Go 1070 for 1080p gaming. In a year or two, jump to 1080ti for future proofing.

That's my plan

Well with more games working better with SLI. Why not get the 1070 now and if you feel you need more, get another 1070 later?

Are there benchmarks that compare 2 1070's to a 1080? I've never considered a multi-gpu config, but def open to it.

For 1440p the GTX 1070 is more than adequate. I currently play all my games at 1440p on my GTX 780 without much issue. On titles like Doom 4 I do get dips below 60fps but BF4 I never go below 60. If you're not planning on 4k gaming, you'll be happy with the GTX 1070 in both 1440p standard and 1440p wide.

Why yes there are

Your choice all depends on your needs and budget

If you get a gtx 1070 now, you will spend about $450

If you get a gtx 1080 now, you will spend about $700

Now something to consider is what type of gaming are you currently doing? 1080p? 1440p? 4k?

I think most people are probably around 1080p, which is fine.

So if you are doing 1080p gaming, you probably won't see the benefit of a gtx 1080 card.

A 1070 will do everything you want at 1080p.

If you decide down the road you want to bump up to 4k gaming and whatever games come out in the future, you can add on another 1070.

Which by that time will probably cost less. Let's guess $380.

So you buy one now. (450) and down the road (380) = $830 over a longer period of time.

You may have to buy a larger power supply to run SLI.

So I say get a 1070 if you're doing 1080p gaming.

Get a 1080 if you've got the $ to burn or are trying to do 4k

someone correct me if I missed something

Yep, you pretty much nailed it.

The 1070 is extremely capable at 1080p and 1440p. At 1440p though, don't expect to max the most demanding games and get 144fps. 1440p max + 60fps is almost always reachable though.

Thanks guys. Good info. I am actually gaming on a 1070 at 1080p/60fps due to monitor constraints. I have a 1440/100hz monitor on my radar. I just haven't bought it yet. My plan is 1440p at 75/100 hz and see what my machine is capable of!
