IM BUYING A NEW A GAMING LAPTOP, IS THE ALIENWARE 17 R3 WOTH IT ?

I've got a 15'' it's basically the same.
They have the best support I've ever been in contact with.
They came home to me the day after the problem occurred. Fixed it.
The thing that annoys me the most is the black bars next to the monitor. Like between the display and the edge is a big "black" zone.
Keyboard backlight is zones, not keys, so it honestly doesnt look that great.
The battery acts as a UPS. THOUGH!! Performence WILL drop alot while on battery.

Easily overclockable (If you chose the right part) Mine is running stable 3.9Ghz overclock. (6820hk) + 980m
excluding the HDD it is 100% silent under low load (browsing etc) and its not very loud while having headset on.
It lacks USB ports (Atleast mine does) And only has HDMI, not display port. It will limit you if you have a cheaper 144hz panel.
 

None the less. I love my laptop, and I am 95% satisfied that I moved away from a big clumsy pc. Just the conviencience of having youtube in the kitchen without having to hold a phone, and skype in bed without having to hold the damn thing. It's quite wonderful like that. I dont like headsets on when I lay in my bed.
You get a keyboard, mouse, mic, speakers, mouse, and display, wifi, all in one, without having to buy special parts. Less decisions to make.
Being able to keep all your files wherever you go, without having to rely on the internet is amazing.
It really does have a good battery, as long as you dont use the graphics card. I think I lasted around 13 hours or something just on battery once about a week ago.



TBH. Its a laptop. Its not a fatpc. You will have to deal with peoples hate ^^..
The only other laptops that were of interest for me while ordering mine, was the MSI and Razer, but as Razers one isnt sold in my country that was excluded, and I've never used the MSI so I dont really know how it actually is using it.

So i looked around for many different kinds of laptops and i feel the alienware 17 r3 is one of my best options. I havent purchased it so i would like some feed back since the model im getting is come to around 2800. 

Im looking for the best display with i7 core and 970-980 gtx..  i really wished they has the oled display on the 17r3 like the they do in the alienware13.

Its a expensive laptop, but a good one aswell. If you have the money go for it. Also a 17in laptop is very big and heavy and i suggest getting a 15 in if you want to carry it around.

#1 This is the completely wrong section this shouldn't be in tech news and reviews.

#2 Why get a gaming laptop? Those things are super heavy and carry less processing power than a desktop. With just 2000 dollars you could get a super overpowered extremely awesome desktop that'll crush basically any game at max settings.

No Alienware is overpriced. Try Sager, venom, and so on. Just check out Linuses videos on them. I would pick up the one with a desktop 980 if you want performance

I agree, him saying he wanted an i7 and 980-970 demonstrated that he knows something about desktops. Basically, he knows. He probably already has a desktop and wants something on the the go.

I had one, it was top spec and everything and yet total rubbish. Had problems overheating at times, and the CPU stats advertised are only for 1 core, so the other cores actually run quite a bit slower. For some reason took forever to boot even with PCI-E SSDs in RAID 0! Also had epic wireless connectivity problems, turns out someone at Dell forgot to connect the wireless antennas correctly.. 

 

I returned it, and never again am I buying anything from Dell. Shame though, as it looked so nice.

Nah, just get the 15. The 15 is already unwieldy and heavy, I daren't imagine carrying around something heavier. They perform about the same. Also, DO NOT GET A 4K SCREEN, AVOID THAT LIKE THE PLAGUE.

I personally just don't see a great reason to buy those super heavy laptops... As I see it the only gaming laptops worth buying are those that weigh 4-5 pounds. Any heavier and a desktop is probably the better option. Those 4-5 pound laptops are configurable with GTX 970ms and quad core i7s which makes them pretty powerful.... The only thing you gain buy going to a 17inch or 18 inch one is a 980m but you're sacrificing so much portability at that point that a desktop is just a better option imo.

True but I find the Alienware has always been a little lesser then the others. They may have changed but they used to have cheap keyboards and trackpads. The screens also were bad but that could have changed

to be completely honest, i know little to no people that were satisfied with their alienwares.

 

even in their before-dell haydays when alienware was THE gaming prebuilt to get there were people with issues left and right. it seems like alienware truly wants to deliver something that does not exist yet, but they seem to forget it doesnt exist for good reason.

 

i would instead like to point towards brands i've seen people have very good experience with like asus or msi and buy from a retailer that have a very good in-house warranty sytem.

 

as for the display, DONT be an idiot. 1080p is good enough for a laptop, 1440p is right on the edge of getting stupid.

 

at home put a nice big quality display on your desk, and when you're on the go those pixels would be a waste of battery life either way.

man it has been a while since I have seen a alienware laptop and back then they were crap just a dell laptop with a higher price tag, but they seem to do better now, still not something I like, but I can see why some people would like it.

 

From what I can tell then this laptop has a heat problem, some places goes up to around 44c on the keyboard and the power button goes up to 49c all of this when gaming ofc. It also gets loud and can go up tp 50dB and in 3D mark is was around 38dB. It has some CPU and GPU thorttleling in extreme scenarios.

The GT72 is probably the best bet here if you want a smokin' machine that stays super chill under load. It's what the Alienware machines dream of being. :P

I've got a 15'' it's basically the same.
They have the best support I've ever been in contact with.
They came home to me the day after the problem occurred. Fixed it.
The thing that annoys me the most is the black bars next to the monitor. Like between the display and the edge is a big "black" zone.
Keyboard backlight is zones, not keys, so it honestly doesnt look that great.
The battery acts as a UPS. THOUGH!! Performence WILL drop alot while on battery.

Easily overclockable (If you chose the right part) Mine is running stable 3.9Ghz overclock. (6820hk) + 980m
excluding the HDD it is 100% silent under low load (browsing etc) and its not very loud while having headset on.
It lacks USB ports (Atleast mine does) And only has HDMI, not display port. It will limit you if you have a cheaper 144hz panel.
 

None the less. I love my laptop, and I am 95% satisfied that I moved away from a big clumsy pc. Just the conviencience of having youtube in the kitchen without having to hold a phone, and skype in bed without having to hold the damn thing. It's quite wonderful like that. I dont like headsets on when I lay in my bed.
You get a keyboard, mouse, mic, speakers, mouse, and display, wifi, all in one, without having to buy special parts. Less decisions to make.
Being able to keep all your files wherever you go, without having to rely on the internet is amazing.
It really does have a good battery, as long as you dont use the graphics card. I think I lasted around 13 hours or something just on battery once about a week ago.



TBH. Its a laptop. Its not a fatpc. You will have to deal with peoples hate ^^..
The only other laptops that were of interest for me while ordering mine, was the MSI and Razer, but as Razers one isnt sold in my country that was excluded, and I've never used the MSI so I dont really know how it actually is using it.

- Good cooling. While what Dackzy posted is true, that's after an hour of Furmark AND Prime 95

- Low noise. 38 db under load.

Thx the other options... i dont want a desktop and i need something movil because i will be using for work $ transactions as well. I know its heavy but as long it performs above good i am happy. As for as heating goes, laptop fans and dedicated fans i have.  Thx again

Can't say I agree with you on the good software bit.  The GT72 I had basically had a wonderful train wreck of nearly all utilities on start up.  Something that was not fixed with a system refresh.  Amusingly enough I couldn't even get my Steelseries mouse to show up on the utility.  And after looking at the prices of MXM upgrades... the benefits seems a bit overstated when buying a new laptop might be more practical.  Still... it was damn quiet, and ran cooler than most things I've seen.  Then again the back light bleed was fucking terrible for the unit they sent me.  Take my experiences with a grain of salt.  Maybe I just got a bad couple of examples from newegg... ended up replacing it with an Asus ROG.  

 

One thing that was either not mentioned or I missed about the Alienware is the potential for future proofing with an external GPU dock.  Alienware is one of two makers right now that have hit the ground running with this concept, so that might be something to consider.  Apparently the prices for the dock aren't too painful.  Also beware of 4k screens on a laptop.  Scaling apparently remains an issue, and it shortens battery life.

I should of rephrased. Not good software perhaps. I'm aware that MSI is filled with crap. I ment has in the like the Bios's are decent and you can do enthusiast things on a GT72.

^ Basically for everyone cept for professional video/photo editing folks. Most 1080 screens have worst coverage and color accuracy compared to their 4k counterparts.
