It looks like AMD has a lot more to show off than just the new card, but a ton of tech to help with it, including things that nVidia has always been way ahead on, like memory compression. In short, I think that we're going to see more than I was personally expecting and hopefully everybody will be happy. Lots of stuff to be excited about. Some should help performance, some should help marketing, and some should help developers. 

 

• Enhanced geometry engines - this card will be able to handle tesselation better. So things like Hairworks might stop butchering performance.
• 32 CUs ROPs
• Some power saving and life expectancy bonuses.
• Faster FP16 - in short, better for computations not requiring accuracy.
• New version of TrueAudio - interesting, I thought AMD pretty much abandoned it. Useful possibly in VR or for advanced sound simulations. You most likely won't see it in typical games.
• Also some additional support for HDR displays. Not my field so can't say much here.

the one slide that is interesting is this one. Basically a measurable(?) performance increase with their primitive discard accelerator. I would take the numbers with large dose of salt as the relative performance likely has nothing to do with actual FPS numbers. It might explain why the 480 has 32 ROPS, if the backend is working 200-300% more efficiently (in best case cherry-picked scenarios).

Actually it's 36CUs and if you wanna get real technical this translates to 64 Stream processors per CU, 4 TMUs per CU and 1 ROP per CU

I already know about the rest of the stuff. Everything is somewhat old news other than the amount of ROPs.

we already knew about the 32 Rops. the most recent news is that there are 4 ACE's, which is somewhat interesting that they dropped them in half, leaving compute queue size at 32 now, which is same size as Nvidia.

We didn't know about the ROPs until fairly recently, but less recently than everything else... Other than the 4 ACE's, I don't actually know what those are because I'm uneducated.

It's not that big of a deal in a lot of cases, apparently... It's still a VR ready card.

Probably something to do with the primitive discard accelerator and the improved efficiency in the backend. If the pipeline efficiency is 200-300% better, seems to make some sense, although I'm sure Tom's hardware or other indepth reviewers will decipher the why's and how's.

That's not like saying it at all. After I learned wtf ROPs are I looked a bit into it and it turns out that the amount of ROPs isn't as big of a deal as it used to be... It still makes a difference, yeah, but nothing to be worried about.

But for comparison sake, a 390 has 64 ROPS, a 390X, Fury, Fury X, Fury Nano. They all have 64 ROPS.......... When the Fury X should have had 128.

Yeah the card is not out yet technically for another 2 hours or so.
