6850K or 5960X ?

Which CPU do i go with?

  1. 1. 6 core or 8 core?

    • 6850K 6 core
      8
    • 5960X 8 core
      6

I'm going to be doing a complete system upgrade soon, and after looking at the benchmarks I'm a bit conflicted. I'll be using my new PC for gaming as well as streaming/rendering and I'm not sure if its worth the $600 for the 8 core.

Currently the 6850K is $915, and the 5960X is $1500 with tax.

if you can afford a 5960x why not go for a 6900k? They are basically the same except that the 6900k is slightly faster.

True, you could save money by using a plain 6700k, but if you have a crap of money then go for the 6850k

6850k, has support for DDR4 and most games don't really utilize all 6/8 cores anyway.

The 5960X is DDR4 as well, also i'll be streaming at the same time, so having  extra cores free will give room for other programs like OBS, etc

nope, my CPU is almost always getting pinned at 95-100% in most games now, the GPU barely gets past 80% unless playing at 1440P

For the dual CPU's it'll cost about $120, and for the motherboard depending on which one you get it'll be between $200-$330. Also the RAM is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, however I really only recommend this for productivity use as the CPU's don't have as high of a clock speed for more serious gaming.

i can't even find anywhere that sells them, and Intel made them EOL Q2 of last year

You can find them on EBay, and even though they're no longer being produced they still kick ass and absolutely destroy the 5960X in multi threaded scenarios.

it's tempting, but i think i'll benefit more from fewer higher clocked cores than a bunch of slower ones, i really just need a few spare cores for OBS to use while the other 4 are used by the game

Maybe consider a regular i7 / a Xeon 1231 v3? You'll have more than enough for modern gaming and streaming with either of those options.

i would go mainstream but i'll be using more than 16 lanes  so the minimum would be the 5820K or 6800K, and i'd rather not have to upgrade the CPU later because i run out of lanes so it would be the 6850K

id say go for the 5960x if you have money if you want to save $500 go for 6850K but both would be a great choose

The Haswell-E equivalent to the 6850K is the 5930K, so why not consider that instead?

(…and then if you're considering a 5930K, you may as well just get a 5820K unless you actually need 40 PCIe lanes.)

If you do allot of rendering work a 5960X wont be a bad investment.

However it just depends on what you are doing for kind of rendering workloads, and which application you are using aswell.

In some applications you can also use your current gpu for render acceleration.

But i would go with X99 any day of the week.

Wenn it comes to the 6 cores, if you realy need those 40 pci-e lanes, then yeah pick the 6850K or 5930K.

But if you dont need it, then dont botter with paying a $200,- premium for just 12 pci-e lanes.

But rather grab a 5820K or 6800K.
