Wait for Cannon lake?

Should I wait for Cannon lake cpus or just get Skylake 6700k?

The next Intel's CPU generation is called "Kaby-Lake" and is supposed to launch Q4'16 or Q1'17. It's up to you, can you wait that long ?

Just get a 6700k or 6600k.

 

Waiting when there is no concrete date, or waiting when things are months away isn't worth it IMHO.  Because by the time you wait for that thing to come out, people will be like "oh wait for this instead!"

 

There's always going to be "the next best thing".  Buy now, enjoy your purchase NOW rather than waiting months.

What I'm getting at is if I get a 6700k I'm stuck with it since I can't afford to replace the cpu AND the mobo especially when I'm trying to reserve some of my budget for a future Volta gpu upgrade.

You could grab any Intel CPU from the last few generations and be doing well. Increases in IPC for each generation has been minuscule. There's no reason to believe Kaby Lake is going to suddenly be amazing.

I know that, I'm talking about the one after that which is cannon lake, Kaby lake is a refresh of SKylake not a brand new generation

Kaby-Lake will run on 100 series chipsets so you won't need to replace you MOBO + Volta is planned for Q2'18 so you have plenty of time there

Yeah but that is more than 2 years from now, and when it will launch, there will be another GREAT next generation launching in two years... Go for the 6700k now, it won't make a huge difference

Not Kaby lake. Cannon lake which is the one after Kaby lake is going to use 200 series chipset

It'S not worth waiting for parts almost 2 years

you never now what'll happen and a 6700k might last you the next 5 years easily IMHO because even first gen i7 isn't that bad, not the best, but you can work with.

I can easily wait for Kaby lake  and I'd rather do it than get a 6700k since it's not that far away as Cannon lake is

Unless you are doing high end and complex compute and video rendering tasks then a 6700K will literally last you for years to come. Hell my 3930K which I just replaced lasted me almost 5 years and I'm the type of person who likes to have the latest and greatest.

I hope Zen shows up before Kaby does.... otherwise, people are going to tell you "wait for zen" when you are ready to buy a Kaby CPU.

 

Regardless, if you are dead set on waiting, I suppose you should aim for either one of the above. Just forget Cannon. My bet is that it'll actually be close to 3 years before we get consumer chips.

You're talking about waiting another 2 to 3 years for a CPU which is only a name at this point. Get the 6700K now and save up for Volta when it comes out. You aren't going to be "stuck" with a 6700K.

You'll be just fine with Skylake.  You can't beat the prices on the 6700k right now and it's a great chip.  $289 at Micro Center and another $20 off with the purchase of a board.

I'm gonna wait for Cannonlake but my situation is different I'm running Sandy-Bridge-E atm and due to debts outstanding so I have no interest in upgrade until Q3 2017 which by then I Cannonlake is around corner.

 

I.was looking at Kaby but seeing as I'm not spending until later in 2017 money seems.better spent on Cannonlake. 

 

My opinion though do what you want, if you happy with your performance now why upgrade just wait if you can't stand it upgrade now and sell your parts for for extra money when Kaby comes out.

cpus doesnt have a huge impact on gaming anymore as they used to. i7 6700k is a fantastic cpu. I have a i7 4790k and i see no reason to upgrade anytime in the next years

If you are waiting to build a computer due to budget I would wait until you have the funds and then see what is out at that time, but if you have the money why not get a computer now rather then planning on getting one 2 years into the future, the hardware will always be changing so you will always be waiting, there really isn't any point to waiting unless a new product is just about to come out in a month or so.
