Someone might be buying my 390x, what equal performance lower TDP card should I go for?

iamdarkyoshi

For my temporarily abandoned passively cooled PC project. Current card has too high a TDP, so I needed a lower TDP card. With a budget of ROUGHLY 500 USD, what would be the best card in terms of low TDP and the same performance? Keep in mind I run 3x 144hz 1080p panels.

a 1070

and its more powerful than a 390x, with much lower TDP

the 1070 sounds like fun

it is more power efficient than its predecessor

enderman beat me to the punch lol

1070 I'd imagine but triple monitor gaming is still not going to net you 144 fps fluently.

Though if you want ultra low TDP then the RX 480 is even better I guess.

I was going to say 980 Ti but that's gonna run too hot for it to be passively cooled.

Oh you're that kind of guy...

Justify for a 1080 most definitely

The 1070 seems like a pretty big gain from the 390x, which does all of my games pretty damn well. Hmm..............

And am I ready to abandon team red after all these years?

I am going to have over 20 CPU coolers on it...

Now you have me intrigued. For a budget of $500, your choices are the 980 Ti, 1070 or the Rx 480 thats gonna be out. WCCF has reported that the Rx 480 can overclock to 1500mhz and at that point it performs similarly to the Fury X.

The Rx 480 has the performance that's similar to a 390x at stock. I'll probably recommend the 1070 and 480 over the 980 Ti since they have a much lower power consumption.

You can always grab a RX 480 - about 130W of power draw/heat output and performance a bit above a 980

Ah, I see AMD sent their team in. Do yourself a favor OP and wait until the benchmarks of the Rx 480 hit. As for WCCF and their reporting.

WCCF broke the news on the 960ti, which launched. Right? I mean WCCF wouldn't lie to get some cheap clicks? Would they?

http://wccftech.com/nvidia-preparing-launch-geforce-gtx-960-ti/

http://wccftech.com/gtx-960-ti-benchmarks-specs-revealed/

As you can see, WCCF likes to take advantage of people looking for confirmation bias, and lies to get people to click on their stories so they get paid by advertisers. Once the NDA lifts you'll se that the Rx 480 is a entry level card, not a Fury X.

Want more proof. Watch this video. Yes it says 490 but he covers the 480 and it's performance. And he has one.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

i thought the TDP was 150 on the 480?

either way, he has a $500 budget, so a 1070 at ~400 would fit that much better than a midrange $200-250 card

also a lot better performance, which he will really need if hes trying to play at triple monitors 144fps at anything other than minimum settings

AMD said "less than 150W" - as evident by the single 6-pin vs the 8-pin on the 1070. And yes, 1070 is more powerful but uses more power and outputs more heat.

usually when a company says "less than" it means only a couple less

if it was more than 10W less they would have said "less than 140W"

so i highly doubt its much less 150

also the number of power connectors isnt an indicator of power consumption

either way, a card with a 6 pin connector is rated to 150W

75 the connector and 75 the slot

so basically its comparing a 150W card to another 150W card

significantly more performance for barely any more power consumption (assuming the 480 uses 141W or greater)

Some leaks were showing 110W power being drawn so I remain skeptical. And reviews also show the 1080 drawing 194W so I imagine the 1070 draws about 170W so it's not a 150W vs 150W but more like 130W vs 170W

With what clock speeds though? Either way, the 1070 seems promising.

But I have been with team red since an (even more insane) card similar to this glorious.... thing.

Pascal has a steep drop off point at 2GHz so I imagine GPU Boost 3.0 takes them to 1800MHz assuming it doesn't overheat cause of the Fermi Edition cooler. The 480 comes stock at 1266 and supposedly goes to about 1500-1600 with a bit more juice putting it next to a Fury X
