RX 480! Polaris is here!

Well, Computex has given Team Red their answer to Pascal. Polaris has its first card, the  RX 480. It looks like it'll be comparable to an R9 390 or a GTX 980. Even though the 1070 seems to on par with the 980Ti or the Titan X, the 480 is almost half the price. In my opinion, AMD's done well here. Budget rigs will look to the 480 to deliver the power they'll want, which, as Raja says, "You won't need a $700 GPU to enjoy DOOM." We have yet to see how the card stacks up against the 1070, but I don't think they're trying to beat it. What are your guys' thoughts? I think this low end pitch is exactly what AMD needed to do, giving them a chunk of the market back after the sweeping hype for Pascal.

RX480 vs GTX 1080 go.

I was set on upgrading to the 1080. Now not so sure. at $199 and with a mobo that only supports crossfire. More Tempted to get 2 rx480 in cross fire. :_)

What do you guys think?

you could crossfire two 480s for only $20 more than the cost of a 1070. And it would certainly outperform a 1070 at that point (provided crossfire is optimized for the game)

I think the card must be a piece of crap if Ashes was the only bench they'd give. I think if this was an R9 390x at $200 Raja would have shown it off instead of giving a quick presentation light on details and devoid of any indication of the card's power.

I do have to admit, that AMD seems gun shy about hard numbers at this point. And, with the same TDP as the 1070, but not the same performance is disappointing.

Might be more powerful, but how would the micro-stutter and lack of CF profiles be?

They were never touching the 1070, they have made it clear for months they're not targeting that level of performance.

I expect this card to be in direct competition with the 1060. Having a little more power would have been nice. And the TDP isn't fantastic, maybe its a very cool card though and can be overclocked like a beast?

That I did not know. But, I would think this drop in performance could come with a drop in TDP.

I think you're being really dense. You've basically comparing a single 970 with two 980s in SLI. They're completely different tiers of card. The 480 is going to be about as powerful a as 390, no more.

Which is why I've been getting a little uncertain, and this sort of reinforced that. This card (the RX 480) is about 390/980 performance which at 1440p is okay but it's not really a solid 60fps or higher like the GTX 1070. Which is what at least I was looking for was something to get a solid 60fps in 1440p gaming at high to ultra settings. The half step up from the RX 480 (whatever that'll be) Might come close to the GTX 1070 but not nearly as close as I would've imagined. Which that $200 to $300 bracket is nice but idk. I really didn't want to go with an Nvidia card but I might if AMD doesn't have something similar by late summer early fall. I'm trying not to worry about this too much because right now my build isn't a done deal because I still need to get a job and start saving anyways. It'd be kinda cool to know what you're planning on getting. Though I suppose plans can always change, and they usually do.

If AMD decide to forego large powerful GPUs entirely and instead go multi-GPU in their top tier cards, and reinforce this decision by making crossfire/MultiGPU an intrinsic part of console architecture I won't complain about it. Cheaper GPUs all around, and forced developer multi-gpu support. Everyone wins.

Wouldn't that give nvidia a monopoly on the high end market? Everyone in the budget market wins, but the high end markets not gonna look too good.

Exactly. Put two 480s on a card, call it a 490. If Multi-GPU is handled better than it is currently, it makes no difference. This is how AMD can compete with an Nvidia who can simply absorb the losses involved in producing big, low yield chips into their Tesla and Quadro SKUs.

Idk, I feel like high end users will go for 1080 over a 480X2 and a 1070 over the 480.  I feel like the 480 is only suited for low budget instances.
