In asking this question, you're going to need to be asking about particular model numbers, it's incredibly dumb to try to compare them as a whole.

It depends on what CPU series you care comparing and what model you are comparing.

But for all we know, the OP could be wanting to compare a ten-year-old Xeon to the most recent Opteron.

You cannot assume anything. Especially when someone says "Xeon vs Opteron - title says it all!" when, no, the title does not say it all.

 

In most cases, yes, the Xeon is the better chip, especially when comparing current offerings. But that's making a lot of assumptions about what he's actually comparing.

Opterons used to be a smart choice a while back for virtual hosts for their much higher core counts at the same price points as a Xeon. Even though at the time the IPC per core were better on the Xeon it sometimes worked out in favor for the Opteron, now after a few years the performance gap is much larger so realistically speaking a Xeon at the same price point as an opteron is going to be better for practically everything unless you want a huge cpu cluster of many many sockets without any GPU/Xeon Phi acceleration.
