having played the game, couple of missions, I can say Ashes is just another take on TA or SupCom but it's not better than either of those

the game's existence is solely due to showcasing AMD's technology - despite what AMD and StarDock otherwise claim

 

the game is shallow, there are no grand battles

the UI is way too unfriendly

I'm not even going to delve into the story and how it's delivered in-game via text

After reading the review, the reviewer seemed to have entirely valid complaints, though it wasn't a particularly detailed review overall. That doesn't necessarily mean that there was no bias involved, but I could imagine a scale from 1 to 10 where that review would merit a 4, without requiring assigning any games a score below 1, and still having existing games which would earn a 10. I think a 6 would be more reasonable, mainly to provide more space for games to be terrible underneath, but I don't think having a 4 for that review then cramming terrible games into 1 and 2 only is any worse than scoring something unimpressive as a 7 and having to compress all the games from good to perfect in 8-10.

 

Basically, unless he can refute individual points from the review, or indicate major good points that were completely ignored, he doesn't have actual evidence and he's just complaining that a guy gave him two bad scores.

The basis of Brad's argument does seem questionable. Also, this is suspiciously similar to the issue of Derek Smart VS Star Citizen, from my point of view.

Read the community standards; it's like a guide on how to not be a moron.

The latest info claims late 2016, but it never was supposed to have a concrete release date. I am not a fan of such a system, but it is what it is; the next Half Life 3.

Ehh... I kind of have to agree. The engine for this game is second to none, but the actual game-play is a bit... Meh. I was really hoping this would be a Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance reboot, but it's a bit of a letdown.

I was being a bit optimistic but last I knew much of the beginning half of SQ42 was pretty well designed and boxed out.

I dunno, have you guys looked at Brad Wardell's twitter page? It's not very "politically correct"...I would not be surprised if somebody took offense to the views he expresses. Surely you guys have noticed how it doesn't take much for people to completely hate somebody...all it takes is a disagreement on a single hot topic and suddenly that person is one of the worst people ever to exist. I've literally seen two people, who actually agree 100% on a topic, argue about that topic because they assumed they disagreed, having disagreed on another topic before...I was watching for like half an hour before I told them...

 

I looked at the time period in question and he certainly says a number of polarizing things. The guy who reviewed the game made his twitter private so there's no saying what he's offended by, if anything.

The review made fair points, and it doesn't sound that critical until you get to the score. 4/10 is a score for a somewhat bad game. Ashes of the Singularity isn't a bad one. It's not a very good one either. More notably, it does what it does very well, but there's nothing else apart of that. As Starkey said in the review , " There is one-note to this song, and, while beautiful in its own right, is ultimately shallow". But that doesn't make it a bad game. More than anything, it makes it mediocre, average. And what's the score we use to reward total mediocrity? 5/10.

 

But this game isn't just mediocre and that only. It's a good mediocre game, if there even exists such a classification. I've played a bit of Ashes myself and I can say I had fun with it. I spent soo many matches trying to beat the AI on normal difficulty I don't even want to reckon how the AI is on the next 4 difficulty steps(or 3? can't recall). The game itself is a pretty generic RTS. You have a base which makes builder units. Builder units collect resources ( 3 of them, 4 when you count quanta), or make constructions with different functionalities. Most of the buildings produce units. You can make combined-arms armies, but the units themselves are a bit boring, but overall they're ok. However, I can say that the particle effects in this game are really really awesome. Seriously, they're amazing. The maps themselves and the graphics don't impress much though. The scale of battles, on the other hand, can do that sometimes! This game gives you a battleground to clash huge huge armies, and it feels pretty awesome when a situation like that arises. Nevertheless, it seems that the best strategy in this game is to rush everything. In the end, RTS games are about who can make the best decisions the fastest. Still, I wish other playstyles would be more effective as well.

 

There are also lots of issues in the text of the review itself. This guy didn't even discover that there's a 4th resource, quanta, which is probably the most important resource. This resource so important that it’s literally displayed inside your player box next to your avatar! You can spend quanta to insert an engineer behind enemy lines to build a factory or to temporarily boost a region’s resource production so that you can fast build a Dreadnought or to increase your radar range or to place a Carving turret to take out a key enemy unit or to get visibility on an enemy force that is hiding behind a mountain so that your artillery can hit them and so on. To be honest, I don't think this game deserves a 4/10. A 5/10 I would understand.I think I'd rate this game ~6/10,  but in the end it's up to oneself to review a game as he likes, whether it be more critical. But it's hard to not notice the somewhat lack of professionalism in Starkey's review, whether it consists of truly false statements, or simply of the bias depicted by Brad Wardell. Let's not forget this is the guy who gave Goat Simulator 6/10, so come on!

 

Let's also not talk about the comments on Gamespot's review page which support the game and criticize the review itself, but which get deleted because...wink* wink*.

I don't get why people are upset here. Looking at other reviews it seems like "average" or "mediocre" is a pretty fitting term for the game. 5/10 means "average". If the author of the review thought it was slightly below average then the game deserves a 4/10. I can't believe people are saying the review is bad because it gave the game a 4/10 instead of a 5/10.

 

I just very quickly scrolled through the review and it seems pretty fair and in-line with the criticisms you will find on Steam and the user review section of Metacritic.

 

I am not a fan of bullshit "gaming journalism" (go go GamerGate!) but whining about how one review site gave you a slightly lower score that most other sites seems kind of pathetic. Hell, even most of the positive reviews I find has a "the game isn't that good" undertone. For example the positive reviews on Metacritic keeps on talking about how Stardock has a history of releasing improvements to the game after it is released. Don't rate it 10/10 and then say it will get better with future updates.

Idk from videos it looks like a freaking boring sandbox game i dont see any good gameplay features.

Like im expecting to be able to raid bases and other transport ships, and just when i think i won radar picks up the alien race swarm attacking and we have to abandon the pray or risk fighting for it, these could be the AI enemy's of the game or so like zerg in starcraft. Also i expect being able to go down on planets to extract resources find artifacts etc and have to fight with native creatures there and or other players, exiting the atmosphere i expect to be able to ambush and be ambushed and have to fight in a gravity like context and fly controls like battlefield 3-4 , apart from fights in space which are boring by themselves. Also hopefully you can talk trought radio comms like feature to any nearby ship channel i dont want to type shit on chat.

Im really curious what will they do about griefing and such if you can get attacked anywhere then assholes will just camp you out and when you get out of the ship which takes a while they just blow you away who knows what resources you lose and so on.

Im not a big fan of pushing graphics to limits either and get horrible stutter and FPS, and then i have to turn everything to low or medium for fights with many players and the game will look like dogshit, points at BlackDesert Online...

CryEngine is a shitty engine with bad performance, altought it looks good im not a big fan of it.

4/10 really doesn't mean "slightly below average" in reviews these days. Even the inaccurate description Gamespot has for the review score is "Poor" - but realistically, 4/10 means "Terrible." Remember, they gave Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition a 6/10. That's a broken port.

 

The review reads more like a 6, and that's more in line with other reviews out there. So I can understand why Brad Wardell would get suspicious.

oh well, more Age of empires... 3 (many would say 2, but i simply love the home town system of 3) for me. I would love to continue Online but some backwater company, which i will not name here, decided to take down GFWL and killing both my Alexandria and Celtica in the process

Well, with a game like that, there really can't be a schedule. It's closer to EVE Online than it is to any other AAA title.

It's not just going to be out and that's it, pretty much always being developed and tinkered with.

We are talking about a video game here, not Arch Linux. When you develop a video game, if there is no set and reasonable deadline, then there is utterly no point of tossing it out to the public. You can continue to improve on it, but you need to set a timeline for when the game is complete, under the original plan. Ironing out what you have is often done BEFORE you slap on new assets, because it is more time efficient to do so.

This is the reason I always take Gamespot reviews with a pinch of salt. They often bias. Whether that's because they got paid or because they have personal issues with developers, they're always bias. Gamespot lost their credibility years ago.
