Valve partners with Lionsgate to bring feature films to Steam

While the release of traditional films onto Steam has been a slow and inconsistent trickle since the functionality was introduced with Valve's own Free To Play Dota 2 documentary back in 2014, things should start speeding up considerably thanks to a new partnership announced today via a press release. The partnership is between Valve and Lionsgate, the Canadian-American entertainment giant, which will see "over 100" feature films made available on Steam over an undisclosed period of time.

Valve has the advantage here of having a massive platform with hundreds of millions of users, the only drawback here is that you actually have to buy your movies as supposed to a streaming service like Netflix, which is way cheaper in the long run. If Valve can manage something like that, then they have a real competitor to services like Netflix and an even more integrated system for both the SteamVR UI and Steam Big Picture for the TV systems, alongside the game library and Steam Music.

I could see this easily catching on if they went with something like $1-$2 rentals for a day. Basically a redbox replacement that doesn't rely on you returning the physical DVDs and all the pitfalls that entails. I'd be much more inclined to spend $2 on a rental for a day than $5 on purchasing a movie.

I have an ITX rig in my living room as a console replacement, G3258 & R7 260x running windows 10 and boots into steam Big Picture mode. Honestly, if people were smart they'd copy the setup as it does so much for so little. It costs significantly less than a console because I already had a GPU laying around, and plays modern AAA titles better than a console. Played through FO4 and Tomb Raider just recently. I also have every emulator up to the Nintendo Wii on it, hence the CPU choice since that was its primary purpose.

I still prefer to play on a console when I'm in the living room mostly because most of my friends have xbox ones and ps4's and I can play with them.

Got an issue with your movie? Good luck contacting Valve to get it resolved.

 

They need to invest and expand their customer support before they add potentially millions of new customers to Steam.

I do, in fact I was talking to my brother the other day, going to start switching to buying blu rays that have ultraviolet for a digital download

Speaking as someone who buys Blu-Rays, the Ultraviolet is absolute garbage (well the Australian experience is anyway, not sure how it is worldwide).  The quality is shockingly bad, the 'HD' is really only HD in terms of pixel count, not visual quality, and sometimes you don't even get the HD version - got shafted with SD for my copies of the Hobbit.  Not to mention being stuck using a stupid Microsoft Silverlight based video player because the downloaded movie isn't even in a proper video format, so you can't even transfer it to a portable device.  I mean you're trying to stop piracy, yet offer such a garbage alternative that there's next to no point in bothering.  Yeah I really don't like UltraViolet...

 

Thankfully Disney does their own thing here with DigitalCopyPlus which gives a free iTunes or Google Play copy instead.  Vastly superior in every way.  I think Paramount does it as well for some movies.  Eventually I'm just going to rip all my movies and dump them on a NAS with Plex, but for now the free iTunes copies are golden if I'm too lazy to go grab the disk and stick it in the spare PS3 hooked up to my monitor.

 

 

In regards to the topic, I think this is pretty neat as long as the quality and pricing remains around that of iTunes or better.  I probably won't buy from it personally as I'm a stickler for high quality, but if we see sales on movies like we do on games, it might provide some decent competition to shake things up a bit.   And from a consumer's perspective, more competition is almost always better.

What's the point? Lionsgate won't let people download the movies, they want to keep it as a streaming service.

Neat - we know Valve has been wanting to go this direction for a while. I mean, they have the content distribution network to easily handle things other than games. I can see them branching out to mainstream movies and music eventually.

 

I checked the selection. Not bad, but it's 48 hour rental only right now. Personally, I find renting a digital download or a steam a waste of money, since for $5 you can often find Blu-Ray's in the bargain bin, or if you think you'll watch it more than once then you might as well just buy it (whether that's physical on Blu-Ray, or just the digital copy on Itunes, etc).

But it's unlikely the movie companies would agree for something like that, they don't want people having movies stored on their local drives for obvious reasons.

Why is that unlikely? There's already precedent set with iTunes and Google Play. You can already permanently buy a digital movie on those sites.

 

Same with places like Cineplex.com (Cineplex is the largest cinema chain in Canada - they have a webstore where you used to be able to buy DVD's and Blu-Rays, but recently switched over to exclusively digital content). Though as far as I'm aware, Cineplex gives you the download via UltraViolet or Digital+, depending on the studio.

Yeah thats why I can just buy almost EVERY movie on iTunes and download it to my PC/iPhone etc
