DOOM will have uncapped FPS when it launches

asim1999

It is good to see this. I just hope that it is well optimised. It makes sense considering that the old DOOMs were catered for hardcore PC gamers.

Quote

DOOM's Open Beta is currently capped at 60FPS, but Bethesda has confirmed that the game will feature no framerate lock at launch.

The developers of the game have stated that the game is locked at 60FPS for beta purposes only, with the code team working hard to make sure that the game will work well at high framerates at launch.

Here is the tweet that confirms this

But yeah it's good to see they are moving beyond the 60fps cap they've had for nearly a decade.

Played the beta.

They need to rename it "DOOM remastered" because that's basically all it is. Just another boring arena shooter. And here I was hoping they tried something relatively new.

I think it would have been better with ADS and the ability to crouch and reload, as well as larger, more open maps. But that's just me liking the newer style of FPS as opposed to the older style. Where every gun is about as accurate as a shotgun, or has auto-aim.

I'll pick it up on steam sale if it gets up to 70% off, just for the single player, which is all I really care about anyways since multi-player has ruined shooters today (used to have decent stories and nice long fun campaigns, but now you're lucky to get a 10 hour half-assed campaign, and then a bunch of multi-player DLC)

For once I would like to see pc devs targeting and then locking at 60 fps so they can use the leftover GPU budget not used for rendering frames for things like physics and fluid simulations and whatnot.

I don't mind remastered, but I would like to see something new. I dislike shooting games without ADS, it's just not as immersive (and thus fun, to me).

Running around hip-firing just feels meh. It only serves to make it unnecessarily difficult to be accurate.

They state it won't be locked at launch, but I imagine it does have some kind of lock attached to it, even if it's something like 300FPS.

If it's handled like the Source engine handles FPS caps, it's probably a soft cap that can be changed with a console command.

Eh, we'll see.

35 seems like a very arbitrary number for a frame-rate lock. You'd think they would have went with 30 or 25. Is there any real reason why they went with 35?

Great to know that uncapped fps will be a thing with a big game like this one.

Other developers should understand that caping the fps is a silly thing to do. If someone buys a higher than 60hz monitor, they should be able to utilize the extra hz, as long as they can run it that way.

Also, OP, can you fix your post for night theme users?

Why has framerate become a subject past few years? theres nothing special about an locked/unlocked framerate. Ever programed any graphics application? it makes no sense even think about "hard locks" some games have an easy option to manually cap it like league of legends or with traditional vsync.

Fucking consoles..
