Linus: Reflowing is WRONG, from Louis Rossmann

Oh yeah, I definitely could have done a more level headed video than the one I uploaded. Not exactly my best... or even anything that was much good.

 

Some of it is the context and culture of the time. Since the iPhone 6 error 53 class action was announced, I've had about 50+ new private messages and 150+ new posts a day to most of my videos discussing how and why third party people have no clue what they're doing and are screwing over their customers. My business gets calls about this... I get mail about this. Not youtube messages, but also real ol' fashioned hate mail, in an envelope. My industry is a joke, and not one taken seriously. The favorite line parroted by lobbyists, fanboys, and the manufacturer's front of line people are that we can't assist them in their repairs because they are not authorized, ignorant, and use poor technique. Which sucks - I've spent the last seven years doing my best to get out information on how to do this stuff right. Every tech shop with a license that sends me a board that got baked or heatgunned or shoved in an oven is proving that stereotype right.
 

I've spent about seven years trying to get people to understand the proper way to do this stuff, two and a half years of it seriously on YouTube. I saw a video where the largest tech personality on YT was kind of undoing all of that and putting a great argument into the hands of the people we've been trying to get to take us seriously... so I lost my shit. Those myths were perpetrated by people who had no idea what they were doing, and look how far those myths went. Imagine how much further the myth will go when it gets hundreds of thousands of views from people with millions of subscribers.

 

I definitely could have done a better video where I didn't come off as an asshole had I just waited a day. It kinda makes me sad that the video I did is getting props from people with names like linusshilltips... the last thing I ever wanted to do was promote more trolling.

 

When you go to the Apple Community Support forums, you'll see my friend Jessa Jones' posts regularly deleted. Someone was having an issue with charging, so she suggested that they clean the charging port. If that doesn't work, try a new charge port. If that doesn't work, use a USB amp meter to see how much power draw there was to determine if the issue was with a U2 chip in the phone - which is totally par for the course. All of it was deleted, all that remained were a few posts about how some unauthorized person was posting questionable advice so people would destroy their phones. A lot of this stems from the idea that all third party repair attempts are unqualified hacks. I doubt we'll ever be rid of this.

Just today matter of fact I was approached by someone asking me if they should bake their broken 15" macbook to fix a dead GPU after seeing linus's recent video (I was admittedly wearing an LTT shirt so it wasn't too strange).     

 

I understand that Linus's intentions were good, but given that his fan base isn't exactly the most intelligent, I don't think the disclaimer was enough to discourage your younger fan base.  I've seen enough "DUAL XEON GAMER BUILD" threads to know that.  But then, if they fuck something up after a disclaimer, that's their fault.  

 

As to Linus's comment that the GPU hasn't died again yet, I would be  curious to know how it would fare looping furmark.  Most of the reflowed parts go bad again within a month of repair from what I've seen.  I am no great expert at these things though.

 

AFAIK, people against the reflow "fix" aren't tying to stress that its a "last resort" , but rather they are trying to highlight the the reflow "fix" is NOT a fix at all.

To be fair, even a normal good GPU probably wouldn't last more than a month looping furmark, so I don't know if that's the best program to test verify whether the reflow "worked" or not

1) He says that you might actually figure out the real problem and fix it. I can see why he would think that since Linus was using a fairly newer model but most people who'd attempt this are trying to bring back cards that are well beyond their useful life cycle AND warranty. Not the kind of cards people will try to RMA, repair or anything like that

 

2) He get's hung up on the fact that Linus said "science" and has a lot of subscribers. I can see why he'd assume that but Linus has a lot of subscribers because of saying silly shit like that and doing silly videos like that. I mean you really think people will go "Hmm this guy has a lot of subscribers, I'll try this whole room water cooling thing!"?

 

3) 2:20ish Huge straw man: The video clearly was about a DEAD CARD not about a card that was "acting funny" Nobody in their right mind would break a card that's still functional but with issues since we know they'd take it somewhere or to someone and that person would underclock it, re-sit it with new thermal paste, the works. Yet he's intentionally misrepresenting the entire purpose of the video: take a broken fucking card you can't really fix for any reasonable amount of cash and try to go for a fucking miracle, see if you can bring it back to life for a few weeks before you toss it in the garbage instead of tossing it right away.

 

4) He talks about temperatures and then gives a huge tell and coughs covering his mouth. He know he fucked up: Yes the temps on the oven might be only 196c That doesn't means that the temps on the lead are that. Materials don't heat evenly. The outer molecules would be MUCH hotter first and even if it's not at the point were lead would completely melt OVERALL it doesn't means a little bit on the outside wouldn't reach those temps and melt fixing the contant. Case and point: IT FUCKING WORKED.

6) This guy just love fallacies gallore: Modified version of argument from authority "Let me tell you about what I don't know so you think I'm sincere in my authority on the subject of this stuff I DO know instead of actually presenting a fact based argument, just believe me because I wouldn't talk about it if I didn't know I'm right, right?"

 

7) He now brings up warranty and says it does not gives you a right to destroy something that's "totally fixable" HOW is it reasonably fixable you FUCKING LIAR? More over I have the right to take a shit on my card and smear it all over my man tits if I want to, just because you're pissed off doesn't gives you the right to be a condescending dipshit and tell me what rights I do and do not have.

 

8) Again a false fucking dichotomy here: I detected a dead capacitor, replaced it, and the GPU has problem. Henceforth you killed the GPU that was otherwise working fine. WRONG, there's more than one possibility, an old card is likely to have a faulty GPU AND a faulty capacitor. Also I highly doubt you'd charge less than 50 bucks to replace a capacitor so again, even assuming your stupid black and white scenario was accurate, why should I pay you more than what the cards on this scenarios are usually worth anyway if I can get SOME use out of it heating it up?

 

9) I sorry it affects your bottom line but the practicality of repairing electronics by independent or third party contractors it's quickly going away. Your job will soon be obsolete. Butthurt much? Focus on an entertaining fucking youtube channel, maybe you can start getting into that as a career since you certainly sound jealous of LTT subscriber count.

I think you missed the point of the video. It's not just about the random enthusiast here or there who will try to stick things in an oven as a last resort on a worthless card before throwing it out. That may be what the video shows or is targeted at, but the issue is larger. It's helping to spread a myth, which (as perhaps you know) I'm not a big fan of either.

With a lot of subscribers, there should be a certain amount of responsibility taken to be careful about carelessly spreading misinformation, that's all Louis is saying.

He's talking about a comment that he was replying to. Yes, the comment is about a situation that is different from the exact situation in the video. But someone decided to apply this method in that situation and broke their stuff, and that's the danger, that's the whole point of his video.

The things inside the oven rise in temperature because they absorb heat generated by the oven. Things will only absorb heat from a source while they're at a lower temperature than that source, as soon as anything reaches oven temperature it is no longer at a lower temperature than the oven air and so stops absorbing heat from it and stops rising in temperature. So, it is physically impossible for anything inside the oven to rise to a higher temperature than the oven temperature. It's possible for the center of something to be at a lower temperature, depending on how slowly the surrounding material conducts heat, but there's no way for anything to get to a higher temperature.

He's making an analogy/example to say (again) that people should do research on topics they don't know about before posting videos about the topic, particularly if you have a large subscriber base who will assume whatever you post is true.

It's not the dead GPUs that are fixable, the whole point is that people blindly apply this method when the problem is something else besides a bad GPU or cracked solder balls to begin with. More often than not the problem is something else, and that problem is totally fixable, but the GPU itself is now destroyed from being baked when it would have been perfectly fine before.

Again, people use this method on things besides old graphics cards. People use them on laptops all the time, multi-thousand dollar Apple laptops. It's not so much about the enthusiasts in the garage that Louis is concerned about, it's other amateur repair people that "learn" things from the internet and apply these methods to "fix" customers' things. I used to work in a computer repair shop, and sticking things in an oven to reflow chips was pretty much standard practice when we couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. This is a real thing that lots of people do, for money, not just a garage project on old throwaway hardware, because they think it's a legitimate method of fixing things.

You should watch more of his videos. He doesn't want nor care about making YouTube into a career, and I don't think he cares about how many subscribers he has in that way.

This is a good point. I talk about why this is bad in my followup video. TL;DR, the more these myths are parroted(particularly by authoritative sources), the more people who have special interests in not providing repair parts, documentation & tools to third parties get to get away with murder. 

When you hear a senator tell you that a lobbyist said you shouldn't be allowed to do X because this is a regular practice, and you google it and 20 tech people are all showing you how to do it.... yeah. You'll be where I was in that video.

A lot of people apply reflow theory to everything after seeing it work on one thing. I have countless videos on the channel of people reflowing devices with "no video" that had one bad resistor. The sad part is that after repairing the original problem, the problem the reflow caused keeps the device from functioning. 

 

I know that for people who do not experience this on a daily basis it is not believable, and I understand if people don't believe that.I can only speak from my experience here, which I document on YT almost bi-daily at this point.

Coughing and covering my mouth was purely from screaming from irritation with no drinking water. Videos I do at work have water or a green juice nearby. If I were a dick I'd come up with some comment on how you used the element lead to describe solder on consumer electronics. Lead hasn't been used on 99% of these products since before I could legally buy cigarettes. If it were leaded solder, it might melt at 196c in an oven, but not lead free. Even leaded, if you put it in an oven but have no direct heat on the chip.Convection by itself will require a higher temperature to melt than upfront, concentrated heat from a direct nozzle/fan or an IR heater right above the chip. 

 

In terms of temperatures, I have several BGA rework videos available where people can see temperature profiles. Nothing there is melting at 196c. 
 

In terms of it working: the more people say see, I had sex without a condom and I had no baby, the more people will have sex... without a condom... regardless of who says "BUT IT'S A BAD IDEA!!!" beforehand. That's not good. Sure, all's cool now the day after, one year from now when you're getting calls for child support it will be different. And three months from now when the GPU is fucked, same thing.  

 

Just because there is no immediate negative consequence in one isolated incident does not mean there will not be a very negative consequence later.

I wouldn't go on to tell you to believe anything from a three time college-failout who cheated on his chemistry regents to get out of high school. Which is why I tell people what to research. My channel is about empowering people to think for themselves and learn what they thought was above their heads. That's what makes me happy.

 

I welcome people to do research on flip chip BGA design, the eutectic bumps, NVIDIA 52xx failures from 2004-2005 when this entire mess started(and yes they knew about all of it in 2004, way before the failures/recalls from every other manufacturer but that is a story for another argument  )

People can do whatever they want. It doesn't mean they should.

 

If someone wants to put something in an oven, they can put it in an oven. They should do so fully informed of what is going on, fully informed of why flip chip BGA designs fail, fully informed that they should think to come to that conclusion before doing it. 

 

Too much crap dead that was otherwise fixable because someone didn't take 3 seconds of time to look for a burned resistor before running for an oven. People can do what they want, but.. why not think?

I don't offer the service of fixing PC video cards. Other companies do, but I don't, so you wouldn't be paying me anything. I don't understand the rest of this point.

This one is off the charts. I really don't want to make a living off youtube. I have videos that state why, but yeah.. I'd rather put my privates in a grinder than rely on google and their algorithms to pay my rent. 

 

I make content to help people who started where I did. Not for subscriber count. I use subscriber count not as a compare/contrast "why don't I have that" measuring stick, I use it to point out how the vastly superior resources that one can put into YT videos when they have 100x as many subscribers could have been used to better research the topic. 

 

I enjoy general IT, setting up phone systems, security camera installation, etc, but that stuff is boring - and there are already manuals out there on how to do all of that, so why bother doing videos on it? I am often accused of being a one trick pony, and with the channel, I get why. If my entire field goes away tomorrow, I'll still have a job. It won't be as fun, might actually pay better... but I'll still have a job.

In terms of going forward, I think it would be cool to come up with something to post a video together on. It got me back on track away from this and towards what mattered, the crux of why this irritated me, when Linus asked... I have $20,000 worth of gear in my office, years of experience, and I am at the mercy of the fact that the people I must rely on to buy those types of chipsets from are dumpster divers on alibaba and eBay. BS!! 

 

I'd love to do a video on the subject. I also think Linus and crew would have incredible fun playing with a ZM-R6200c and its 1080p camera

I'm curious. Louis mentions Bumps bonding the silicon die to the substrate ie: the 'wafer-bumping'. method of die bonding. He says the problem is that the bumps get messed up over time due to repeated heating and cooling and they are completely encased in underfill so they can't be accessed to repair.

He seems to imply the solder balls and the bumps are not related, but the bumps in wafer-bumping are composed of solder also.

The silicon die is basically bonded to the substrate the same way the substrate is bonded to the graphics card's circuit board.  The main difference being that the silicon die also uses an epoxy underfill between the die and substrate (epoxy/fiberglass composite) for solder joint protection and added bonding strength.

 

So if the bumps are solder based, why can't the solder bumps be reflowed?

 

Louis also says that lead free solder melting point is never reached, I don't know what type of solder AMD uses in their chips, but Nvidia apparently does use high lead based solder in their chips, and this is the root of their problem.

Commonly used lead solders do melt at below 385F according to Wikipedia: (I also heard the term eutectic used so I'll include that here also)

My boss thought I was a shit employee, not worth more than the $6/hr I made at the time. Admittedly, I was terrible at following merchandising standards at Modell's Sporting Goods, but I always thought he was an asshole, you know? One of those guys that after 10 years of being an assistant manager, well into his 40s, takes the color arrangement of golf gloves more seriously than most do their own marriage or family. I even got a write up for something being under a gondola after closing after a 12 hour day- that was it for me. Fuck it, I quit! So I started my own company repairing boards no one else wanted to fix, rolled that into a successful school & tutoring program that top reverse logistics & ewaste recycling firms have been sending students to by the truckload. The YT channel is my down-time hobby & charity.

 

My current boss thinks I'm an asshole, but at least he doesn't write me up, and pays much better than the Modell's douchebag. He does scream too much when people talk about reflowing dead GPUs though, but hey - at least it's not at me.

You just can't beat him and his niceness. You first came off to me as an arrogant person but now you seem like a cool person. I may not agree on everything you say but maybe it was because the only videos I saw were the Apple rant one and this one.
