Dota 2 Host fired and called an ass by Gaben

So basically the host James Harding said some things he probably shouldn't have said during the event like starting off with an awkward joke about not being able to find pornography on his hotel tv because of China's restrictions. And then in the segment that probably got him fired he was trying to entertain the audience by asking questions like which player would you replace and top 3 captains and after that he got notified that he was fired because of disrespecting players and a "bottom bitch" joke. His defense of that joke was he is personal friends with the people he made the joke about and they reached out in support after this. And one of his over all defenses is that he was told VIA text to be himself before this event.

Gabe Newell replied on reddit that they had problems with him in the past and people at Valve thought he deserved a second chance so he was given it and apparently he blew it and he said giving the second chance was a mistake because James is an ass. And also btw the production company is being fired because audiences complained that the event was low quality.

yea I can see why there are problems and he also leads into the porn joke at 56:10. Mr Wang's wheel chair adventures? Really? Pissing off the East Asians BTW this is in shanghai and disabled people in one joke.

 

I think valve was justified in firing him as his comments can be damaging to the reputation of dota and thus valve also but I think he was just trying too hard and isn't necessarily an "ass".

He might be an ass but thats what they payed for and he was told to be himself, also the fact that Gaben made a statement like that on reddit is extremely unprofessional and the whole shanghai major  has been a disaster. You could also see the discomfort and unwillingness of the other dota personalities to be them selves.

an esports gaming news section would be nice. because we do have a PC gaming section, however most just talk about fixes/performance in there.

This guy is awesome, he makes the games much more interesting to watch especially when there are lots of delays. Ok, so the joke was not the best... but that got the conversation going, and the "sex" joke wasn't the reason why he got fired... A lot of people even stopped watching after he was let go... it is boring to watch the segments where they talk and discuss... For those interested, read 2GD's perspective ...

My $0.02: this whole thing, from what I know about it, was completely unprofessional. This James person (I've never seen him before -- didn't watch the tournament at all) was doing his job from my understanding. Gabe was under pressure from other employees to do something about James, when James was told to be himself.

 

It's Valve's lack of communication and Gabe's overall lack of being professional in the gaming industry that made this happen. This whole event, even though this shit happens in real sports all of the time, is going to look bad for eSports especially since Gabe was involved.

 

Valve is at fault here, not this James person.

Ok... so he said a few things that raised some eyebrows. To remind everybody, we also had a certain somebody doing the same kind of thing for a while, and he keeps his job to this day.

 

I will give the benefit of the doubt that there is more to the matter than we are told about, but this is certainly not the right approach. Not only in terms of the staff structure, but also plain old PR.

To those who are not DOTA fans, James has a LOT of fans within the community. Personally think hes the best DOTA 2 host around. He does things his own way, but does a great job at getting the most out of his panel. Absolutely hilarious to boot.

Look up a youtube video or two on him and you will see why the community loves him.

You know what makes esports fun to watch? but you got to admit some of his comments are too over the top. sure add some humor but dont go completely overboard and call players cunts and make an awkward porn joke that could invoke offense from chinese authorities
