Need opinions before buying parts

JosipK

Hi,

I have been using a laptop for years (ASUS K53SD) and with time it has become too slow for my needs. Building a PC looks like a logical solution and since I know how to assemble one I just need help picking out parts.

These are the parts I plan to buy unless you convince me otherwise:

CPU: Intel Core i3 6100 3.7 GHz - (1279 kn / $187.12 USD)

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti OC 2GB - (1399 kn / $205 USD)

RAM: Kingston DDR3 8GB PC12800 1600 MHz - (399 kn / $58 USD) or Kingston DDR4 HX Savage 8GB 2133MHz - (539 kn / $79 USD)

HDD: WESTERN DIGITAL Blue WD20EZRZ SATA3 64MB cache 5400rpm 2 TB - (699 kn / $102 USD)

Total so far: ~3916 kn / $573 USD

Motherboard: I need help picking one out from here or here, it would be great if under 500 kn / $73 USD.

Display: I need help picking one out from here or here, it would be great if under 1300 kn / $190 USD.

I'm also looking for recommendations for a wireless mouse, I have big hands so its hard to find a good one.

Thanks guys, you are awesome !

Try and get a 950 instead of the 750TI. Or an AMD equivalent. Just wait a minute or two, and someone will recommend a better AMD card for the price.

I guess you also could possibly get a low-power Xeon instead of the i3, which would give you a little more power at the cost of the useless iGPU.

R9 380, or 280. Otherwise have a look at EVGA B-Stock and see what they have.

Can't find any R7 370/R9 270 you can afford? Or better a 950?

Use the DDR4. It'll be much better that way if you're going to use Skylake. For the motherboard, I would recommend using an MSI board as they are usually cheaper than other options such as ASUS and have great build quality.

I could get the GTX 950 for $20 USD more, if the difference is noticeable. Thanks for the suggestion.

There are no 280s here and R9 380 would be almost a $100 USD increase in cost.

It might be easier to get something like an i3-4170, H61M motherboard, 8GB's of DDR3, and a GTX 950.

Going for i3-4170 instead of i3-6100 would save me around $15 USD. Is it important to go for the i3-4170 in your configuration ?

Thanks for the motherboard and ram suggestion. GTX 950 is a slight bump in price and since there are multiple recommendations I will take it.

Any suggestions for the Display and mouse ?

Those prices don't include shipping. Some part don't even ship to my country.

Thanks for the suggestion. What would be the advantage of the DDR4 ?

Look at the pcpartpicker list I posted.

i5 equiv. performance on CPU and a 950. Even added an SSD.

I suggest the highest res. IPS monitor you can afford. For mouse; the MX Master is very dominating, isn't it?

DDR4 is newer and Skylake is newer. If you are getting the i3 4170, you would need DDR3, but if you are getting the 6100, get DDR4

Also, I think you might want a quad-core. In 2016 you might need one, and I'd suggest the i5-5675C and the MSI z97 PC MATE board. And the i5 5675C has Iris Pro 6200, so you probably don't need a graphics card. I added the combo of the DDR3 RAM (you need DDR3 for This processor), the board, chip, and hard drive and it came to ~3,592.37 kn or $526 USD. I myself use the i5-5675C and Iris Pro 6200.

You don't have to do that but it's a possibility.

With the RAM thing, Let's put it simple, if the four numbers (ex. 6100, 4170) and the first one starts w/ a six, you need DDR4, If it starts with 4 you need DDR3. If it starts with 5 and ends in C, you need DDR3, if it starts with 5 and ends with K or X, you need DDR4

You'd need an i3-4170 or something from the LGA 1150 socket to fit in the suggested motherboard as it's socket LGA 1150. Skylake CPU's only work with LGA 1151 motherboards.

Ok guys, I have a better idea of what I need now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Could someone tell me what would be a AMD alternative to the i3-6100 or i3-4170 ?

Also any suggestions on the display ?
