R9 390 vs GTX 970 FOR MY NEEDS

Which one if I am planning to edit videos, mod skyrim, use heavy shaders in minecraft, and play fps's like rainbow six siege

Sapphire is what I'd go with, but I heard MSI has way better overclocking potential. So probably go for MSI.

Hmmmmm that's a tough one. Video edit both will do fine with the corresponding software.

Modding skyrim on the other hand is vram and gpu intensive which goes to the 390. Modding is fine on the 970 as well but you will have to know how far you want to take your mods.

Not sure about minecraft but both should play rainbow 6 fine. 

G1 if 970

Gaming 8g if 390

390. Heavy shaders will eat vram. I use like 7gb In gta v .

Also, what's ur resolution. Amd Cards pull up further once redndering at a resolution above 1080p compared to a vivid a card of the same hp

If your video editing programs leverage CUDA- like Adobe Premiere- then the GTX 970 is a slightly better option. For everything else, though, the R9 390 is far, far better. Also, if this is a new build, crossfire motherboards are cheaper to find than SLI ones, which makes it far easier to put in another one and theoretically double your performance later on down the road.

Sapphire is to AMD what EVGA is to NVidia, so I'd recommend them as manufacturers. However, if you intend to overclock, I'd grab something from MSI- their cards just seem to get the highest clocks.

It heats up fast, unless u resize the default fan curve

I'm not sure about the gigabytes one, but my strix cards reach 103+c when folding at home.

If you use CUDA, go for the 970. If not, the 390.

What CPU do you have? if you don't have a very fast one (decent speed i5, like 2500K or better) then I'd suggest GTX 970 over the R9 390 since AMD's drivers have worse CPU overhead so their cards will more easily hit CPU limitations in games. Otherwise the R9 390 is a bit better, at least for gaming.

I'm pretty sure the R9 390's computational power is substantially better but it also depends on whether the editing application supports hardware acceleration on AMD's hardware. If memory serves a couple years ago Adobe Premiere and After Effects only supported CUDA, but that may've changed.

R9 390 if you ask me - preferably Sapphire, MSI, PowerColor or XFX

The VRAM will definitely be useful for skyrim and even games such as Rise of the Tomb Raider (which ate 3GB of VRAM now low for me and goes as high as 6GB of VRAM usage on ultra).

For editing, if using Sony Vegas then the 390 will be several times faster. If using CUDA-based apps, then the 970 will have an advantage.

CPU-wise, all you need is a sandy i5 or better and you're good (basically, the lowest I'd go for those GPUs is a i5 2500K or Phenom II X6 1100T)

And the Geforce G1 cooler is audible at idle and almost loud as the reference Nvidia cooler at 100%.

Like my overclocked GTX 970 G1 which hit 77^oC this morning....(yes its allowing me to overclock it again and its boost clocks atm with the 155MHz OC are insane).

Long story short, my GTX 970 is about as bad as a 290x for heat so going to a 390X (for the vRAM-I just find a stable driver and stick with it) is no big deal.

Hype. The mid to upper range cards are way out and will be primarily for higher resolutions and efficiency. So at that price point the 390x is a monster. Id rock it.

Uh....no. Considering what's happened with Hawaii and Grenada I can't trust AMD. They'll probably pull another fast one with Polaris. Note also that I'm talking about calling an old GPU new.
