Well it appears the 1050p HP monitor is failing. It was made in like 2007 too. Can't run my 900p hp as a third for awhile as it doesn't have an HDMI port. :( Back to two monitors I go with a big empty spot on my desk.

I don't even know where to start anymore... I've owned 2 970s in the past year, first one died to a faulty psu which was replaced before the new one, and ever since I've added a 3rd monitor it has been driver crashing nonstop and unpredictably. It can be as simple as web browsing or while gaming or even while folding. I'm running 2x1080p panels and a 1050p panel. I've had many installs of Windows 7 and Windows 10 within this time period along with trying different drivers. It doesn't matter if I'm running the gpu at stock clocks or if I have an overclock on it.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions...? Thanks. :(

Use DDU and start fresh with the newest drivers

Use DDU and start fresh with the newest drivers

... I've done that with every driver install, I've gone through dozens of windows 7 & 10 installs to the same exact result.

Are you OC'd at all?

Like I said I've tried stock clocks and an overclock, same result, only happens with more than 2 monitors.

Getting a cheap secondary gpu is an option. Probably a good idea to stick with nvidia because nvidia drivers doesn't like amd stuff.

A second-hand card or a really really cheap one can do the job if it doesn't need too much power.

 

Tbh i think one of the controllers that takes care of the output is a bit broken.

 

The 970 itself can output maximum 3 display signals. But as you have probably figured out the 970 has 4 display outputs.

Just an FYI if you try to use all 4 of them, you can't.

 

What happens is that there are 3 chips that take care of taking the display out of the gpu and changing the signal so it's right for the display output.

Usually 1 is straight connected to the DP output, and 2 chips are connected to 2 displays each.

Usually 1 to the HDMI and bottom DVI port, and 1 to both DVI ports.

It's perfectly possible that 1 of them is broken and fails to convert the signal properly.

 

And an FYI you can't connect 4 displays to a 970, well you can but at least 1 won't display anything because there is no way for that monitor to get a signal because there are only 3 available.

 

I have 4 monitors and i have 2 displays connected to the iGPU because of all that D: That's how i found out about it btw...

I wouldn't think the card would be broken as the same thing would happen with my old 970. I had a 650ti under my 970 until it began artifacting but drivers still did the same thing. (Yes, I did have secondary monitors plugged into the 650ti at that time)

if youre sure its the 1050p monitors then just go and buy a 1080p monitor, since nvidia surround only works with monitors of the same resolution

How is that VRAM nonsense even relevant to this? or are you just one of those incessant window lickers that just has to bring it up every time the 970 is mentioned?

 

@OP does windows download a driver for the 1050p display when it's connected for the first time? if it does try going and deleting the actual driver(not the Nvidia display driver) for the monitor to see if the issue persists.

clearly the GPU works fine

the problem is the 1050p monitor which isnt behaving correctly with the drivers

 

youre not being any help in this topic bashing the 970 for completely irrelevant reasons

I wouldn't think the card would be broken as the same thing would happen with my old 970. I had a 650ti under my 970 until it began artifacting but drivers still did the same thing. (Yes, I did have secondary monitors plugged into the 650ti at that time)

Then a secondary cheap gpu seems like the best option :(

bhahahahah... until like 2013 there was unlimited amount of monitors being able to run off nVidia cards on Linux, but they cut it down to 3 on the driver side because Windows drivers couldn't do more than 3

so I call bull on that it's hardware limited, and if it is hardware limited in 2016 then daym... nvidia is cheap

Anyway, clearly the drivers dont like that third monitor, I would get a matching 1080p one just like the other two and sell the 1050p monitor on craigslist to make some of the money back

Well the 1050p monitor I found in a closet in my house like 4 years ago and the TN panel on it is horrid. Kind of irritating though that nvidia drivers would be so picky about a mismatched resolution with the other panels.

 

I guess I'll fold a bit and watch something on my plex server and see what happens with the monitors driver uninstalled. If it works, thanks @Ostwind for the advice.
