Hey there!


I am interested in mining some bitcoins.
I am not 100% sure if I should build a machine and get some nvidia or amd GPUs (probably 2, and not sure which one is better, amd or nvidia),

but I also saw these little tiny USB dongles that apparently are ASIC cards. I thought they looked like a GPU.

So... Should I mine with an ASIC card?
How would I go about that and what are some of the best ASIC cards out there?

Complete beginner here (read the FAQ and basic stuff and have research, but just wanted more info).

Don't waste you time and money. They are no longer worth it. An asic (Application specfic miner) is very expensive and GPU mining is not even worth the power bill. The difficulty rate of each block is just way to high to gain profit.

Why do you want to mine bitcoins?

Just for fun?

Are you OK with loosing hundreds of dollars just to have some fun?

well, in areas you dont pay wads of cash to run an LED bulb (yay belgium...) they are usually profitable, but you indeed wont really be getting a return on your investment quickly.

but indeed, gpu mining is basicly just throwing cash out the window right now.

 

theres some setups out on le interwebz about people who splurged and got like 500 usb stick sized miners and built a project out of it. if you do it as a hobby go right ahead, theres far more expensive hobbies than spending 1K on something that'll end up bringing in some cash.

(or let them run off of a windmill because of the fun stories: "yeah, that windmill is making money right now")

 

but if you're not a chinese investor, you're out of luck on the big money wagon.

unless your power is free and you steal it from somewhere, youre going to lose tons of money even with an ASIC

Although it is true that you can't GPU mine Bitcoins or other SHA-256 Coins (ones based on or similar to Bitcoin) or even Scrypt Coins (litecoin, dogecoin, etc.) unless you want to lose money or never make ROI (return of investment). But however you can mine coins of other algorithms like X11 (Dashcoin), Blake-256 (Blakecoin), Lyra2REv2 (Vertcoin), Quark (Quark), NeoScrypt (Feathercoin), Keccak (Maxcoin), Groestl (Diamond), CryptoNight (Monero), etc. If you ever want to check if a certain miner is profitable enter your hashrate (depends on the type of coin) power cost and power usage at coinwarz.com to find the most profitable coin for the algorithm you are mining.

If you get an ASIC that can mine 4TH/s minimum and have free electricity you will make money.

Well... I thought there was still money in Bitcoins. Wanted to get some extra cash on the side.

The only real way to make money with bitcoin right now is to buy the coin and hope its value goes up, then resell it(i did a bit of research, but the value should double by the end of 2016 thanks to the bitcoin halving)
