Why are people suggesting Haswells over Skylakes for new builds?

I've seen this in different build threads, and was wondering why.  I am aware of the bending issue with the Skylakes, but most people weren't using aftermarket coolers.

No issues , but with the high demand for 6th gen cpus , the prices are significantly higher . (+100$ for the 6700k compared to the 4790k)

Cheaper, especially if you already have DDR3 RAM

Because the price Skylake was being sold for was not the intended price by Intel, each generation only yields around 5% more performance so many didn't see the price worth it

Also availability. In some markets Skylakes are really hard to find. Haswells OTOH are far from rare. And the differences between the two are not large. If you can get a Haswell for cheaper and right now... it's a good deal. 6 months from now, not so much.

Well, I just built an E5-2680 based build with Sandy Bridge, because I got it cheap.

And I just realized that most of those builds had graphics cards.  The reason I'm interested in the Skylake is because of the significantly better iGPU, which wouldn't apply to most others.  I should have thought a little bit longer before I posted. :D

Cheaper, and a i7 6700k is currently more expensive than a i7 5280k

Right now, Skylake is difficult to recommend due to the pricing.

For £300, you could get either the 6700K or a 5820K. I went with the 5820K simply down to the fact that whilst X99 is a bit more expensive than Z170, for what I do I feel it will deliver more for me than what the 6700K will.

That's not to say the 6700K doesn't have its merits. It has more powerful cores than Haswell, it has pretty solid integrated graphics (you could probably drive some games off of it, in fact), and it's pretty much the bleeding edge of commercial microprocessor technology.

However, you can generally get a 4790K for roughly £250. Compared to Haswell on a value proposition, Skylake is hard to recommend at this time. If it were a bit cheaper - say, £250 to £270 - it would be pretty much perfect for the price. But £300 is asking a bit much for just four cores...even if it has hyperthreading.

1- A lot of people don't OC

2- A lot of people don't know about OCing locked CPU's on Skylake, even if they did they probably wouldn't do it.

3- Having to purchase DDR4 when people have stacks of DDR3 lying around is an inconvenience, despite being on price parity with DDR3 now.

4- If 1-3 apply to a person it makes more financial sense to get a B or H series board and a locked Haswell. There are still ridiculous deals out there for hardware being moved out of retailers, and the budget systems are usually the last to go.

There is no logical reason to recommend Haswell over Skylake ATM except in very specific use scenarios like a super budget builds, or a budget render machine, i.e. Xeon 1231v3, where Skylake no longer supports Xeon's on the consumer boards.

The performance difference is very small and right now, haswell is a lot cheaper than skylake when it comes to both the cpus and the ram for them.

Not to mention that Skylake motherboards are way over priced.

i recently had to upgrade after killing my z77 board (at the time didn't know if it was the chip or the board). At the time a skylake 6770k was £330 and the 4790k was £235, also i already have 16gb of DDR3.

So given the price of the skylake chip and it mean't buying more RAM it was a not brainer for me to go with the 4790k.

Skylake at the moment just doesn't represent good value for money at the high end of the market.

On the issue of bending skylake chips, don't use on of these, and you will have litteraly no issue.

I went with skylake because I waited so long for it that I was gonna get it anyway. I did wait for the best prices, so I got my 6700k for $375 and the mobo for $210.

My 4790k cost 300 and my Mobo 130. That's a 105 dollar difference, that's why people advise Haswell OP.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Well honestly, I only spent 210 for my mobo because it looked good. And during the 1st week of November, I remember seeing 6700k listed at 329. It was on Amazon but it lasted something like 2 hours before it returned to 400.
