"Bang for Buck"-Build for a friend of mine

The_Sandman

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine asked me if i could build him a Gaming-PC in the near future, so we could play games together online (mainly Battlefield 4 and other FPS's). I want him to have a good exerience so i think he should be able to play these games at 60+ FPS and should have upgrade options in the future. He doesn't need Keyboard/Mouse but he needs a monitor. This is what i have come up with so far but it's on the limit of his budget, so you guys maybe have any ideas how to improve this build?

It's difficult for me to give you a budget because prices are different here in Switzerland. But his budget is at arround 1000-1500 Swiss Francs. We purchase from this site as it's the retailer with the best prices here:

Thanks in advance for your help :)

(PS: I know i went with 16GB of Ram but let me explain: The i5 Skylake isn't really more expensive than older i5's here and 2x8GB of DDR4 Ram is only 20.- or so more expensive than 2x4GB sticks. I want his build to be upgradeable and therefore i didn't want to limit him to 4x4GB of memory. But feel free to tell me if these thoughts are wrong and i should pick something different :) )

When $1500 is bang-for-the-buck.

I'd go for an AIO Watercooler and save the money on your windows licence by purchasing from Reddit or G2A / Kinguin (or not-so-legal sources).

I'm not really good at bang-for-buck building i think^^ That's why i asked for help here, i know you guys here are good and can come up with something powerfull that can give him a good gaming experience but costs less than my build. As i said this is his absolute maximum (probably a bit over his budget).

Reduce the RAM to 8GB, it's too much for just gaming. I'm not sure how well this will translate to Swiss Francs but I'd get a cheaper Gigabyte mobo and a cheap copy of Windows off either Reddit or G2A, and grab a R9 390 for better gaming FPS:

Thanks :) The problem is that a 390 costs 389.- (instead of 262.- for the 380) and the motherboard i picked (ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming) is one of the cheapest boards with overclocking available. Even if i go down to 2x4GB sticks of ram i only save 30.- on that. I hate the pricing over here xD

PCPartPicker is down for me, but here are my suggestions-

There's no longer any need to buy a K-series Intel chip. ALL Skylake chips can be overclocked via base-clock overclocking on any Z170 motherboard, so you can get the cheapest Skylake i5 (an i5 6400) and overclock it to keep up with the best of them. I believe the Hyper 212 EVO offers better value as a cooler, and you can replace the fan on it to make it dead silent, or you could even get something like a Corsair H60 AIO watercooling loop to push that overclock further.

Also, 7200RPM drives are noisy as heck, and 5400 RPM should suffice for mass-storage, and you'll get more capacity for the money, or you can put the money you save towards a larger-capacity SSD. I hear the Crucial BX200 500GB model is going for like $130 on Amazon.

Unless you're considering crossfiring R9 380s as an upgrade, that power supply is overkill. EVGAs bronze series offers better value and possibly just as much wattage, all while being reliable and featuring 80+ bronze efficiency.

The NZXT S340 is arguably just as good a case for a far lower price, and even comes with a nice power supply shroud to hide your cables.

And lastly, instead of investing in 'Gaming Headsets', you might consider picking up some reference monitors. The Superlux HD 681 EVO offer unparalleled sound quality for the price, and the $40 you save getting these instead can be put towards a microphone instead, yielding better quality audio on both fronts. As someone who has used several pairs of headphones, I cannot vouch for the audio quality of many 'Gamer' oriented headsets.

Here's a great USB condenser mic for $40.
http://www.amazon.com/CAD-U37-Condenser-Recording-Microphone/dp/B001AIQGUO/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1451995463&sr=1-2&keywords=condenser

Also, you can probably find Windows keys for cheaper on other sites.

All this should knock a significant portion of your budget, allowing you to allocate it to a superior graphics card for an enhanced gaming experience- perhaps even a nice monitor to maximize its potential.

Thanks for the input :) Sadly the NZXT S340 costs the same as the Fractal R4 but i really like the look of it, i will show it to my friend thanks :)

I never purchased Windows keys for cheap, but i will do some research on that. But is it save? I will also see if we can ditch the headset and just go with another solution, but we could save some money there, good idea. I also thought that he could get the HDD later on and just start with a 250GB SSD until he has some money to spend again.

As far as the CPU goes, is it really a good idea to go with a non-K Chip? I don't know much about the overclockability of the non-K Skylakes but i will do some research on that.

Edit:

What Monitor would you recommend that doesn't blow up his budget? I just went with the ASUS VG248QE because i heard good things about it in the reviews.

Well, what I saved you with the CPU, Cooler, Power Supply, and Storage can be put towards a better video card. For a card like an R9 380, I'd recommend 1080p. For a 380x, I'd recommend 1080p ultrawide.

Also, you don't need 16GB of RAM for gaming. In fact, I know of few games even now that use more than 6.5 at most. Content creation and video editing is another story, but I think 8GB - especially with DDR4 - should cut it.

If you can be a little more frugal (with the storage and case) I think you might be able to squeeze a 390 in there, with which you can damn near max out everything at 1440p and get good framerates at decent settings even at 1440p ultrawide. Post in the 'Display' section of the LTT forum for recommendations. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but PCPartPicker shut me out.

But once he has it, he wont let it go, and seems its within budget, and the 390 in the build suits it pretty well, many games can go triple, and intensive games can be maxed on the middle one by itself.

No one needs 3x, it's more of a "wanted" aspect.

@Coaxialgamer made a really nice build, depending on your locations pricing, I'd go with it.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Yes it's a great build, and i wish i would live in the US to get those parts :D

I put together a list from the shop in switzerland (Monitor wasn't available so i picked the cheapest 1080p 60Hz i could find, same for PSU and SSD)

https://www.digitec.ch/en/ShopList/Show?shopListId=7F1339C5564A0C54AC42E8DB050B4BE5

As you can see it costs 2'056.-

No one needs 3x, it's more of a "wanted" aspect.

@Coaxialgamer made a really nice build, depending on your locations pricing, I'd go with it.

Thanks , i originally wanted to keep the 144 hz monitor , but i wouldn't fit . triple 60hz was cheaper .

Too bad I messed up with currencies and that it's out of OP's budget ...

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Ahh bugger...
Guess its back to z170 instead of x99,... to save some cash.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Nevertheless it's a really good build you put together :)

You can also buy something cheap:

Then you can upgrade your GPU and you are ready to go. Maybe the R5 330 is enough for some playable framerates if you crank down the settings.

Thanks for your idea :) I don't really like prebuilt machines, so i think i will figure something out to get him his Gaming-PC. Maybe he wants to save a bit more and then get his build together a little bit later.

No problem... That's what generally people do when they buy prebuilts: uninstall bloatware, add RAM and a decent GPU

Or you can get something that's actually good:

But I still reccomend building one yourself with similar if not better specs. Unfortunately, you can't upgrade the Pavillion because the power supply is bad, and you will have to change it
