So this christmas I am going to be building a new computer for my parents because there current computer(laptop) that is 7 years old is just painful(mainly for me).

They keep things in general for a really long time,  especially electronics.

I'm looking for a Cpu that will be powerful now and powerful enough 5 years from now.

I would like to stick with some sort of Intel and i think that is the right choice anyways because they are just better IMO.

They are not big power users.

My mom:

-Emails

-Quickbooks for business

-Facebook + Facebook Games

My Dad:

-Emails

-Reads the news

-Watches videos

So as you can see they aren't power users but I still want something that has some get up and go when maybe it needs to or when I want it to.

I was thinking i7-4790/4790k because they are a little down in price compared to some other processors.

Let me know you opinions.

Thanks

i7-4770k | Asus Maximus VI Hero | Corsair H100i | 1080ti  | G.Skill TridentX 32GB 2400Mhz | Samsung EVO 1TB SSD | Corsair RM1000i | Fractal Design Define R4 | LG 27GL83A

i7 is WAY OVERKILL for their needs. i5 would probably be overkill but it would be a better option. I would go with a 4690 (non-k) if your looking more on the power side.

4790k is fine.

4690k is also ok , but the frequency bump on the i7 gives it the upper hand.

Pentium MMX, when they complain just tell them their internet provider is too slow, get them to upgrade the internet, so you have a beast PC with beast internet.

NO! Core i3 will do.

People are going to hate me for this, but just get a out of the box solution like an Acer, Dell, Lenovo, etc. Don't bother building it yourself for something as basic as this.

In all practicality I agree with this. But if you go this route be prepared to uninstall all the bloatware and crapware they bundle with their systems.

Heck, after the recent certificate scandals I'm not too keen on trusting these guys any time soon.

Maybe just do a clean OS install of you can.

Pentium, i3, AMD APU, Phenom II, or Athlon 860k...whatever is cheaper.

A Core i3 or AMD APU are good enough for their needs

But what about 5 years from now? That's why I lean toward like a i5/i7.They keep everything for a long time until it needs to truly be replaced so I'm trying to pack 5-7 years or more worth of computing for them into one little mitx build.

That's why people are recommending an i3 or an AMD APU. They will last a long time, especially if you get an SSD for the system.

They're not gaming, or doing any sort of video production so I won't sweat it. Even the systems I've used when I interned at a data management firm still had Athlon systems. All they needed were stable machines to do email, spreadsheets, and word documents.

I built my parents a computer for Christmas with an i3-4170, 8gb ram, H81 chipset, and a 120gb ssd. They have similar computer use that you listed.

I figured that if at work we are getting by with heavy autocad use with 3rd generation i3's and no dedicated graphics card, then a 4170 will be more than enough for them.

But what about 5 years from now? That's why I lean toward like a i5/i7.They keep everything for a long time until it needs to truly be replaced so I'm trying to pack 5-7 years or more worth of computing for them into one little mitx build.

My parent's computer is still running on a old socket 775 pentium and it works fine for what they need to do which is basic web browsing and watching video. The machine is around 8 years old.

Thanks

Come on man, that's ridiculous to buy your parents a 4790k. The 4690k would be more than enough for them.

A modern i3 should still be fine 5 years from now--I don't see how web browsing would need more than 4 threads even in the future.

Computer technology gets better and cheaper with time. Get what you need now and skip spending more for the future and not the other way around.

my brother has an i3 laptop (6 years old)

he never played any games or heavy programs, just web, movies...

it works like a Swiss watch :P

keep in mind it's a laptop CPU

+ an SSD in there and that thing would be lightning fast
