Is it okay to buy a 2.5 year old Graphics Card?

Fury_ZA

Hi

I currently have a choice between a GTX 680 (MSI Reference | 2.5 Years old | $150) and a GTX 660 ti (Gainward Phantom | 1 Year old | $110)

I was just wondering if it's still okay to buy a 2.5 year old Graphics Card and Unfortunately I can't get anything decent for cheaper in my country. (GTX 960 costs $280)

Thanks for the help

Fury

the performance on a 680 is still solid today. the 660ti is a bit under powered.

its certainly not a bad deal though for 150.

Yeah, It should be fine if you are going for the 660Ti as that thing is beast and plays most things at high settings. Don't worry if you can't get anything better sometimes older cards outperform newer cards for the same price (not very often though)

It's still okay. Hm.. No R9 380? It's within your price range.

if you buy an old card knowing you're buying an old card, it'll be just fine.

you'll have to deal with some outdated-ness like less VRAM, and less support for modern standards (my GT640 refuses to do DX11, but is a DX9 monster considering its wattage...)

Because I live in South Africa, we have to pay a tonne of taxes to get an import on graphics cards. So R9 380 is around $270, insane right :D

Get the 680. It may be an older card BUT in terms of benchmarks and raw performance, it still outdoes the 960. Remember it was an *80 grade card so even with the performance increases throughout the last 2 generations it can still easily hold its own. Newer is NOT always better.

Okay so age isn't a problem, as long as the card is in working condition ?

The 680 should be fine. If it works, yeah.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I still use a 670. The performance is solid. I get consisistant FPS on very high settings at 1080P and have no plans on upgrading soon. A 680 will be just fine as long as its in working condition. Only limit is the 2GB of Vram. Just got to be mindful of that but if you play at 1080P should be fine if thats what you intend to play at.

So you are saying that if someone says A is better than B you would also suggest A, but if no-one suggests anything you just go with what you *guess* is better?

It's not that it's not ok, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. For little more you can buy an r9 380, a better card in all respects.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

That's almost as much as I would have to pay here in Canada. Canada, the country directly north of the US.

In fact looking at anandtech benchmarking GPU 2015 it looks like the 680 is just as good mate!

The 680 perform better in most games it looks like...

Yes, but I dont get what you mean by "guess which one is better"? And guess what is better than what?
