So for the machine I just recently built, I wanted to go quiet.

All the fans are Corsair Quiet Edition. I have them running usually between 60%-75%. There's 6 of them total in the case and they can be quite quiet if turned down.

Temperatures are not a problem with an H100i cooling a 6700k and the 980 Ti (SeaHawk/HydroGFX) with its pre-installed H55 keeping the GPU frosty.

 

Besides the fans and pumps, there are no other moving parts in the system.

The pumps make no noise I can perceive even with my ear right up against them.

The fans can be made to go even quieter if turned down to 50% and with the temps I'm seeing, that wouldn't be a problem.

 

But now, my system is so much quieter than it used to be that all the other noises in the apartment stand out.

The sound of the fridge running drowns most of the sound the PC could make.

The noise of my neighbors' showers, air conditioners, and whatever else they have that make a dull hum, is constantly audible.

I often second guess myself as to whether a noise I am hearing is or isn't my PC. Most of the time, for the really audibly annoying noises, it isn't.

 

So I made a quiet (not silent) PC but there's no way I'll be hearing a pin drop next to it given the rest of the noises in the area.

 

To all those who are looking to make their current or next PC a quiet or silent one, take this as a cautionary tale. You might eliminate one noise only to find yourself noticing many others you never really paid attention to before.

 

And before you ask, when gaming or watching videos, none of this is a problem.

Yea... city noise drowns out my computer most of the time... Pretty annoying actually.

I'm probably one of the few people on the forums that doesn't care about how much noise their PC makes. I love white noise so much, I bought a dehumidifier just to drown out the silence.

honestly same. my gt610's fan makes so much fucking noise for a gpu, but i honestly don't mind it., in fact, i kinda like it. but my PSU's fan is quite annoying.

I am the same way. I usually have noise canceling head phones on when i am gaming and otherwise i dont mind it. If i dont have music or the TV on in the background, its a surprise. I actually thought about upgrading my case fans from 2000rpm to 3000rpm for cooling because noise dont bother me.

I found with my most recent watercooling setup the sound a hard drive made just spinning dominated the noise out of my computer. Then I replaced that with an SSD and all I could hear was the PSU. Eventually I got it down to the point where I could hear the NAS across the room. If I eliminated that I suspect I would find myself hearing something else. But it was immeasurably quieter just removing the noise of the CPU and GPU fans.

Yeah, sometimes we'll have construction or maintenance work being done just outside our apartment which is yet another loud motor.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it until I heard it for myself. I had my old HDD in the machine for a few days while I sorted through the files and copied the few things I actually wanted to preserve.

The HDD was louder than the fans. Sheesh.

I live on a farm in the middle of who knows where and when you are home alone you get this weird noise of nothing. It is hard to explain but it is like a static noise coming from your own ears.

same boat as you, between my noctuas and pump, the PSU's electrical noise and clicking fan and Storage/Back up HDDs are the loudest parts in the system. A PSU with a fanless mode is on it's way, and the HDD spins down after 3ish minutes (set to one minute though,,,)

 

With that said, an interesting video would be what the actual diminishing returns on "silent" fans would be. At what point do you reach where adding another fan would be louder. @Slick @LinusTech

Personally I'm in a room that is more or less quiet unless a car drives by. After silencing my PC I noticed the printer made a lot of noice in idel to I turned it of when not in use.

Now the loudest thing in the room is the tick tack from the clock.

 

To break the silence I normally listen to music. For working I prefere classic music on low volume. And it just sounds better when the chime is fadeing out into silence and not into a constant white noise from the fans.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

Well yeah, I never claimed it was an issue with the PC.

It's just something I wish I had kept in mind and at least mentally prepared for when I was planning to make this PC quieter than the last one.

You can do a pretty simple test: Just turn the PC off and you can simulate the noise level of a dead silent PC. ;)

Yes, I ran into that too. But anyone can build a pc that's quiet in idle. I still attempt to build the machine as quiet as possible to make sure the noise level is acceptable even when a moderate load is present.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Yeah, the important thing is to actually stop and listen.

I think I was too excited about the idea of my PC finally not sounding like a pair of motors that I never thought to actually stop and really listen to the other ambient noises.

I actually don't have about fan noise as long as the pitch is really low. I really hate HDD noise though. 

 I dont mind the spinning as long as it's not a constant up and down... the head clicking (not bad clicking) on the other hand.. oh man
