60HZ vs 120HZ AND BEYOND

Okay so i have owned a monitor with 60hz refresh rate and nothing else, so i am not sure if there is a big difference between 60 hz and 120 hz for example, since that is all i know and whenever i max out a video, game , movie or anything at 60 fps it looks very smooth to me, but again i can't compare it to a 120 experience.

So i am asking you if there is a big difference between 60 hz and 120 hz, do things look a lot smoother ? Is it worth it to pay the extra money ? Also how hard will it be to run games on 120 hz on a 1920x1080 monitor with the GTX 980 Ti and lastly, if you get used to 120 hz does going to 60 hz look and feel a lot less smoother, kinda like when you go from 60 to 30 fps .

Thanks for your time !

It looks smoother and there is less motion blur (if you can run your games over 120fps)

I have a 120Hz monitor and I will never ever ever go back to a 60Hz monitor. For me it's like night and day. I would definitely invest in a 120Hz monitor if you don't have one, the difference is amazing. And a 980 Ti will easily run games on 1080p x 120Hz.

Don't have one? Buy one, that's all I can say.

I agree with Fooshi, over 120 it's hard to notice the difference, my monitor is set to 144Hz but I can just as well set it to 120Hz without noticing the difference.

An easy way to describe the difference is this, You have a game running at 60 FPS, your monitor is 60Hz, which means it updates 60 times a second, that's perfectly fine. But let's say your game is running at 120 FPS per second, would you see the difference? No you wouldn't, because your monitor is still just updating 60 times a second. If you get a 120Hz monitor it will update 120 times a second instead, which is twice the speed the 60Hz monitor, so basically a 120Hz screen is twice as good.

You'll start noticing a difference around 70-80 FPS. For me, 120-ish is the threshold for me to notice anything faster. 120 looks the same as 144. But yeah, 120/144hz monitors are amazing. Definitely worth the investment.

OK so everyone agrees that they are worth it xD it makes sense yea , its just hard for me to imagine since i am so used to the 60 fps that i just cant imagine anything looking smoother , but i guess it is possible, thanks everyone for the info !

I hate 60hz now after using 144 and 165hz monitors.

But perhaps some science will help. There two experiments that might interest you. One is that done on pilots flashed silhouettes of planes for less than 4ms (280fps) where they could identify the plane. The second experiment in a dark room with a bright white flash for 1ms (1000fps). Past that we could not tell the flash occurred.

So we know from these two experiments that somewhere between them likely lays the point from which we can not tell the difference from reality. 60hz is no where near the known limits of human vision, anyone with normal vision can tell the difference in blind tests.

Yea ive heard about the pilots test, and i do know that the human eye can notice the difference between 60 fps and more , i was just saying that i am used to 60 so it wont bother me too much if i went and got another 60 unless i saw a 120 or 144 screen xD

Its an expensive thing to fix. The problem is that once you get used to it 60hz will feel like 30hz does today, so you will forever be on the 144hz or more end of the monitor spectrum. I value it much more than higher pixel density, I personally think smooth motion is a more important image quality aspect than any other choice today.

I am sure that if you use a 60 hz monitor long enough you will get used to it, i got used to a 30 fps style of gaming for a long time and didn't notice it , it became the norm until i moved to 60 then i again started hating 30 xD but i agree, smoothness is very important , now i feel like i am really missing out by not being able to get a 120 hz xD but i guess it also has its downsides, like how it uses a lot more gpu power

if there is a big difference between 60 hz and 120 hz

Yes, it is nigh an day differences when you jump from 60hz to 120hz.

Any monitor not at least 100hz will not my preferable anymore unless the device I want to connect cannot output more than 60hz.

From 120hz to 240hz is noticeable but not night and day.

From 240hz to 360hz I had no idea as I don't own any of it.
