390, Nitro or MSI

 

970, EVGA or Zotac

Gigabyte too on the 970.  I dont know about them on the 390.

Look, the r9 390 is really not that much more powerful.  The 970 is very good and will last as long, if not longer, than the 970.  And for Fallout 4, you cant go wrong getting the 970.

So the 970 would be better for what I need. (modding, txt packs, fo 4, 1080p, i dont want to have to upgrade for a few years)

That is a metric not worth the measurement. Having seen the benchmark for Fallout 4, the 970 appears to be the better option, unless AMD provides some crazy optimisations soon.

You may not use more than 4GB of VRAM at the moment for Fallout 4 but if you plan on modding the game in the future the 390 with 8GB will really help you out in being able to run those mods. The 970 will just be obscilete when it comes to running mods in the future. Go with the MSI 390 or the Nitro they are the best cards out right now. No others will compare to then when it comes to the 390.

 

Note: I am not an AMD Fan boy I just think the 390 is better for your situation and needs at the moment.

I would go with the 970 as I have seen some go for really cheap, $289. I feel like the 390 is good for somethings but you probably won't need all that Vram for 1080. Personally I would go with the GTX970 but others may disagree

You may not use more than 4GB of VRAM at the moment for Fallout 4 but if you plan on modding the game in the future the 390 with 8GB will really help you out in being able to run those mods. The 970 will just be obscilete when it comes to running mods in the future. Go with the MSI 390 or the Nitro they are the best cards out right now. No others will compare to then when it comes to the 390.

 

Note: I am not an AMD Fan boy I just think the 390 is better for your situation and needs at the moment.

No I have not seen the benchmarks, the game has literally been out for 2 days though you can't expect everything to be perfect from the start. Also, If I was a fanboy don't you think I'd have an AMD GPU in my own system instead of a 760? You can't judge a card off of it's day one benchmarks.

Yes, you really wont be dissapointed compared to the 390 4gb...  The 970 will fit your needs.  Heck, im trying to get a 780ti, which is older and has less vram, but im looking to get it to last multiple years.

I'd advise you to wait. Because the way textures work in fo4 is alittle different. Right now modders are tinkering with textures.

I'm not sure how this affects vram usage but generally it should increase. If you want to be sure that you bought the right card. Wait till amd comes out with a driver update and when more info about modding fo4 comes out.

And im not just judging it all off the day one benchmarks, im considering it as a whole. However, those benchmarks, which you should watch before advising amd gpus on future Fallout 4 rigs, make my advised gpu even easier.

I am no modder (have not had a good enough pc other than for mincraft when i was younger) but i think 3.5 vram will be fine, but if not, it technically has 4gb vram, just the last .5 vram is slower.

I've yet to see a texture mod that pushes you over 4g. I've got some aggressive shit running in Skyrim and didn't have an issue with having the 4g because of the 290 crossfire. What you will need is GPU power, if you're not crushing the game now, you have no business looking at texture mods. That puts the 970 as the choice for 1080p modding for Fallout 4. Unless AMD pulls their head out of their butt and delivers a driver.

But even if amd did fully fix it (because just 5fps does not mean fully fixed from 40fps-50fps and sometimes around 55fps compared to the more consitstant 60fps 970), the 970 is still a great choice.

There is no single texture by itself that will push vram usage that high. I've already told you before. If you find that your vram usage does not increase, that means you're doing something wrong. Even some peeps on ocn have reported vram usage as high as 5gb.

I have until November 30th because of Cyber Monday so I will wait until then to see what things are out so far as right now, the gtx 970 looks like a better option.

You most likely wont be dissapointed because according to app, 3.5gb/4gb vram will be fine for modding, the power of the card is great, and Nvidia features.

You call that alot? And I'd suggest you to optimise your textures as well. Having those textures overwrite each other makes it useless.
