GTX970 vs GTX970SLI vs GTX980

legodude

Hey guys

looking at upgrading my GTX770 with something more powerful, I'm running a triple monitor setup at 5760x1080 and the GTX770 just doesn't cut it.

Because I work for an electronics chain in the UK I can get a lot of money off computer components plus I have a £50 voucher.... also I don't care about power draw.

I can get a £341.49 for a GTX980: or £201.99 for a GTX970... (two would cost me £453 due to also having a £50 voucher)

What should I get?

Corsair 650D, i5-4690K (Corsair h50 cooler), Asus ROG maximus VII Ranger, Asus GTX 980ti Strix, 16GB Corsair Vengeance pro series Red (2x8gb 2400mhz), Corsair HX850W, Asus Xonar Essence STX, Sennheiser HD595 / Beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 250 ohm, Samsung 850 pro 128GB / WD black/blue/green, OCZ vertex 3 60gb . Corsair M40/Corsair k70.

For price to performance, 970 SLI is better than a single 980. However, what resolution do you plan on playing at?

A 980ti would be better because of the extra Vram 6gb total

Sli 970 if that's not an option.

the 2 970s will outperform the 980 in most scenarios but you have to worry about the chance of games not being optimized for sli

if you can afford it go for a 980 ti

I chose SLI 970. Most modern games that actually need that much power can usually do SLI without issues.

And usually if SLI doesn't work a single 970 is enough anyway.

But hey, ultimately it's what you value most. if you can live with extra heat output, and your PSU can handle it, SLI is pretty good.

Yeah, 2 970s are much more powerful than a 980. But at your resolution you might run out of VRam in some games, which could limit the performance...

I would opt for a 980TI if it fits in your budget, because it has a better VRam/Computeperformance ratio for your resolution.

Time stamp above 3:38, 970 is slightly better than a 980ti mostly so if you already have 1 970 just get another other wise get a ti

also your setup is about 3/4x pixels of 4k

It's what people on here have always told me, so idk

I think you've misunderstood or they have. One GPU is better in situations such as power used or in games where SLI is very poor/not accepted. However, performance wise, usually the 2 will be better than the one.

I agree with some posts say about games not optimized for SLi...

Dragon Age Inquisition is pure shit with SLi enabled and runs amazing when I turn off SLi. Even WoW was giving me shit with all settings on Ultra and I lowered everything to High and now no more lag spikes (not a add on issue). 1080p and 1440p didn't make any difference.

Honestly now I would get a single GPU and not deal with any more hassle.

I would advise maybe something with more VRAM. Maybe Crossfiring 390s instead? They have 8GB of VRAM, rather than 4GB. I found an MSI 390 for 215 euros. Unfortunately, I cannot link it because the trackpad on my laptop is partially broken(buttons), so if someone else could link it for him on the Newegg UK site, that'd be great.

Edit: I found another MSI one(same cooler) for 209 euros.

Two 970s in SLI are obviously a lot more powerful. As some others have already suggested, get a 980Ti if your budget allows it, else go for 970 SLI.

For that much resolution?  The 970s may start running out of VRAM.  The 8GB 290Xs are running in that same price range, and will perform just slightly better than the 970s in SLI.  I love my 970s, but they have limitations.  With new titles at that resolution, having more VRAM would be VERY beneficial.  So....if I were to be buying GPUs for that resolution, it'd either be a 980ti, or 2 x 8GB 290Xs.

CPU: Ryzen 1600X @ 4.15ghz  MB: ASUS Crosshair VI Mem: 32GB GSkill TridenZ 3200
GPU: 1080 FTW PSU: EVGA SuperNova 1000P2 / EVGA SuperNova 750P2  SSD: 512GB Samsung 950 PRO
HD: 2 x 1TB WD Black in RAID 0  Cooling: Custom cooling loop on CPU and GPU  OS: Windows 10
