If you are going to Miami, make sure you read the signs. They have signs everywhere in Miami for tourist, that way you do not go down in the wrong neighborhood or the wrong street and get m ore then you bargained for. Just a heads up. Stay in tourist Land while visiting Miami :)

I use to live in the beach area of LA and I would say good places to go are the Santa Monica pier or if you want something a little low key the Redondo beach pier is a nice place to go. Be careful in Hollywood though as it can be dangerous if you stray too far from where everyone else is. If you want to do some shopping Torrance has some nice more cheap shopping and everyday stuff with some nice cuisine if your in that area the melting pot(not cheap like $8 for appetizer, $35 per meal, $15 for dessert) is a must. Beverly hills has the more expensive stuff(saw a $180,000 necklace there once).  Malibu is a nice place if you want to see beaches and if you want to go farther up north you can go to morro bay and beyond that and you will have some really nice beaches and some may have sea lions or dead sand dollars that you can find and keep. If you want to do some physical ocean kayaking is something really fun in palos verdes. If you want a museum the getty villa is an interesting place it's like a recreation of a roman villa. You also have several theme parks six flags(if you like thrill rides), universal studios(movie based attractions), and Disneyland(more calm rides, but still really fun)

My family didn't do much outside of where we live so that is about all I can recommend.

when you go to NY, do yourself a favor and get yourself a "real bagel" otherwise known as a water bagel (watch out, they have an absurd amount of calories, so just make room for it :D), best things, good is a huge attraction there in NY, go and get the best

Is the budget including accommodation?  10 days NYC can be very expensive ;)

-------

You can go from LA to Las Vegas by (rental) car. They normally don't charge any drop off fees between California and Nevada.

Avoid going to Detroit.

They need to go there. Soo much to see and test your stamina when homeless and local gangs will want to meet you both.

You may or may not want to answer this, but what country are you from? I'm just interested to see what you can do in the US that you can't do in your home country, so you don't waste your time.

lol I live 45 min from there. I've been there several times, and it is a dump. Only reason to go there are for special events, sports games, and casinos.

Youre local you got high stamina. Its like in The Walking Dead in Detroit, but change zombies to local gangs and homeless (dont look different than zombies; they even mumble like them). "Its not in going in - its getting out" :P

Well you're not going to find spiders that try to kill you in the US.  :D With $355 a day, that should give you about $150-200 to spend a day ($100-150 for hotel, ~$50 for car). Try going to Six Flags Magic Mountain if you're into roller coasters. If you want, you could try going to a sports game.

Definitely go to Santa Monica Pier, it was a lot of fun. Hollywood will be crowded, but it's worth a visit just 'cause.

Give a visit to Chinatown in New York. I hear it's like a miniature Taipei... sounds tempting to go see something mimic my hometown.

Stay away from Texas. I speak from experience that you do not want to come here.

what do you mean? Austin is great, just avoid the country side, we have awesome food and great places, although it won't be as great as the other places he's going, austin has the nicest people ever.

plus we have goddamn amazing tacos :D if he ever goes to austin, he better go to Torchies Tacos and Chuy's
