CPUs w/o Onboard Graphics

Kimba

I don't know a great deal about the topic but could Intel or AMD remove the onboard graphics portion of some of their CPUs or create a product line which does not include them. In theory this would reduce the heat output or provide more space for extra cores. This would presumably be on the higher end products where GPUs are expected.

Feel free to teach me if or why this is not possible.

You can just disable the integrated graphics in the BIOS and then they'll shut off and not generate heat.

Ok, thanks guys. I don't often look at the high end products as I can't afford them. One can dream

I believe no xeon with the x99/x79 socket have onboard.

This would be possible but say if the GPU fails. How do you test if it's the GPU that's failed and not some other component?

You buy a GT 720 or something low end for $30 :)

I believe no xeon with the x99/x79 socket have onboard.

Some of the E3 Xeons have onboard graphics, but that's just because they're the same silicon as the consumer parts just with ECC enabled.  E5 and E7 Xeons don't have integrated graphics.  Similarly, E3 Xeons without integrated graphics still *have* integrated graphics, it's just been fused off.

This already exists, that is what Intel LGA 2011 CPUs are, like the i7-5820K.

AMD has not released any high-end CPUs in a long time, but the last time they did it did not include integrated graphics, with the 8-core FX-8350 family.
