I learned a lot from modding games in regards to files. This led to me being knowledgeable in Windows 7, 8, and 10 (when it came out) and allowed me to ace their interview questions on software and BIOS. My hardware knowledge was just icing on the cake

You'd be surprised, the knowledge we consider to be "basic" is actually quite advanced to most of the general population.

Computers and tech have been an integral part of my life since I was 4 or 5 years old, it has been the main form of entertainment for many years, it was the reason I tought myself English, it was the reason I did an IT education and it is the reason why I am now currently employed as a fiber optics engineer... My love of tech has become my way of live long ago.

I've built my first pc a couple months back. Just before i got all the parts and got started, i found out my gf was cheating on me. My pc build really helped me forgot all of it and help me move on

My tech "life" is my job is repairing, setting up small networks. I'm at times where I can get really busy and times where the work is quite. Right now I'm designing a network for a person. 2 switches, 2 routers and a VMware Server

Knowing how to use one, let alone build one yourself, gives you more insight in what's really going on behind the screen.

This has been a huge advantage when talking to people (IT-Service) and finding quick solution.

So as a mechanical oriented engineer, IT-Service likes me, which is pretty contradictory usually.

 

-Not to mention building my own pc from used parts has saved me more than 500-1000$ over the years.

 

Bonus: when problems occur, instead of going through a slow process of IT service, I can troubleshoot my own PC, get the problem solved, and continue my Engineering Work. Thus i get more done in the time where others might be Down.
