I have suspicions about the integrity of my PSU

Appel
Go to solution Solved by Xenift,

my gpu is always running at about 20% load because of my cpu, I'd hate to bottleneck it even further

Wooo theres no quick fix to this.

I rather you save money for the cpu then spend more on a another psu.

Hi,

I finally got a new hard drive, but that still has not alleviated the crashing. I now use a 180 gb ssd, and this crashes much less frequently. After adding my HDD into the mix again, it crashed pretty frequently.

So, i came to the conclusion that, because HDD's draw more power, my PSU was to blame.

I cant really just go and buy a new PSU on a whim, so do you chaps know of any way to troubleshoot a psu? or for that matter, troubleshoot any other possible causes for my problem?

I have an EVGA 600B psu rated at 80 plus bronze.

in my system:

A10 7850k

Gigabyte Windforce 970

an Intel 180gb SSD

1tb WD 7200rpm HDD (sometimes)

1x8gb ddr3 corsair vengeance

Corsair H65 water cooler

some LG optical drive

and the mobo is a Gigabyte F2A78M-HD2

I just wanted to clear up what I meant by crashing.

example:

Playing a game of comp with my mates

suddenly, screen freezes and stays on the last displayed frame

fans all slow down like its idling.

nothing is responsive

have to hard shutdown.

Nope no way. That's more than enough power, your HDD is faulty.

I don't know, I originally had a faulty HDD, but I had it replaced 3 times. I find it hard to believe the third one they sent me is also broken.

Also, that HDD is currently sitting in my bro's rig, and he has had no problems with it so far.

I know that 600w is enough, but I thought it could be faulty and might not be running at 100%

Check the sides of your psu, some psus allocate very little power to certain pins.

For example, the graphics card obviously has more power input by default, the cpu has lesser power provided from the psu.

600W might mean 200w to cpu 250w to gpu.

POWER SPECS AC INPUT 100 - 240 VAC, 10A, 50 - 60 Hz RAIL +3.3V +5V +12V +5Vsb -12V MAX OUTPUT 24A 20A 49A 3A 0.3A 49A 130W 588W 15W 3.6W TOTAL 600W @ +40C

According to these sources, your power supply reached 125/130W JUST for the cpu.

Not counting motherboard usage.

AMD Cpus run with really high wattage, overclocking the thing doesnt help either.

It only has one sata power ribbon. Do you mean that I need to try changing the gpu and cpu cables around? or do I need to get a new cpu/psu?

I was thinking of getting a new intel cpu anyway.

Get the new intel cpu xD.

125W on load is insane for a cpu.

Even a labbeled 600W can barely handle it.

alright, but that might take a while (I'm still in full time education) so, until then, do you have any fixes?

Try underclocking the cpu.

What ye mean by strangling xD.

I said "UNDERCLOCK" lower the voltage and stuff like that so it will less of a choke.

You have plenty of power but wow, holy CPU bottlenecks batman! But seriously, I doubt you're getting crashes from the PSU. Try running the system with no GPU and see how it works.
