Upgrade current AMD CPU or wait?

Nope, FX-8350 doesn't really offer a fix to the poor single core performance of the FX series.  Going from 6 cores to 8 cores is diminishing returns.  Unless you have a specific game you really value your FPS in and you know it benefits from more cores, it's just not really an attractive move given your median game is four threads right now.  

 

You're better served to live with the bottleneck and wait for Zen/Kaby Lake and see which one you like or jump to Intel right now.  

So right now I've got an FX-6300 OC'd to 4.4 GHz, however I've been thinking about upgrading. I'm just debating right now weather to buy an 8350 (which I know is getting dated) or to wait for Zen and get a new gen upgrade.

 

And yes, I know, Intel is better in many, many ways. But I want to hear opinions on AMD.

I'd wait as upgrading to a 8350 won't really get you into current gen tech, and zen will at minimum be a large improvement over the fx series.

well looking at market trends and trends in tech i reckon the zen cpu's will be slightly worse than the i7 flagships the 6700k for instance. It could be a failure relative to what it was going to achieve. aka being a titan killer. And the faildozer thing from a few years back.

edit: in short wait for ZEN if intel aint an option

Upgrading your 6300 to an 8350 is not worth it.

the 8350 is barely a performance improvement, and zen will probably need a new motherboard, and will still perform worse than an i5...

so yeah, dont upgrade unless you can afford to switch to intel

the FX-6300 is a good match for the R9 270X, in order to get better performance in games you'd need to upgrade both...and the FX-8350 is not any better than the FX-6300 when it comes to gaming.

I felt like my old 270x performed much better when paired with the 4690k than the fx8320, however this could just be the bump in minimum frames in most of my games.

 

I would suggest to wait  though the jump from 6300 to 8320(OC to 8350) is minimal, I have two other systems with those both with 270x and they perform almost the exact same.

a better CPU certainly won't hurt and well you do get slightly better minimum FPS and smoother animations and in some CPU bound games (MMORPG, RTS, MOBA) you can get better results...but he certainly won't be blown away by the upgrade to an i5 or i7 while using a lowish-end card like that...

 

In order to get noticeably better performance in games across the board he'd need to upgrade to both a fast modern intel CPU and a more powerful GPU...upgrading only one or the other will have limited effect since the FX-6300 will limit the performance of a GPU such as a R9 290/290X/390 or a GTX 780/780ti/970 for examle.

 

i would still perform the GPU upgrade first though if the money is an issue...he will get more performance increase by moving to a faster GPU.

Agreed since i did them around the same time I only had the 270x with the i5 for a short while, the jump to a 780ti was much more worth it.

Of course it'll need a new mobo. Ones with AM4. 

 

But no....Zen will be pretty competitive with the i7s....Don't make things up if you haven't read about Zen at all.

One more time. We CAN quantify the effect of switching from CMT to SMT and moving to the 14nm node. It would be extremely difficult for the team led by the co-author of the x86-64 bit architecture to mess up

Actually minimum FPS would be higher but if that is the only reason its not worth it. :P
