gtx 970 or r9 390?

Sir_Chicken
Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

This is what you loose if you go with the R9 390:

This is what you gain in exchange, up to you to make the right choice for yourself ;)

proven fact though the GTX 970 overclock a hell of a lot better and within 2 minutes of tweaking in afterburner will shrink this 4% advantage.

actually my evga gtx 970 i had was better off at right under 1500mhz, then again it had an asic of 60something. my friends evga 1.0 sc version also was better of under 1500mhz, so yeah.. nevertheless an oc'd 390 is still faster than oc'd 970, aint it?

edit: mine was the ftw+ 2.0 with the bigger cooler.

It is, thanks to the way GCN is designed, it handles more instructions per clock effectively needing less Mhz to achieve the same result.

I haven't seen a pair of 390s that could match up with my 970s.  Granted, my 970s are exceptional, but.....no, I would say the 970 with a good overclock is better than a 390 with a good overclock.  The 970s just have more headroom.  The 390s just don't have that much room to work with.

That sounds about right.  I've seen some at 1200 and 1250, but that's starting to get up there pretty good.  Still....

1200 is quite a good OC for a GCN 1.1 card - the architecture does quite a few more instructions per clock than Maxwell so each MHz is much more important than on a 970 - hence why clock for clock GCN is superior.

@Pohernori can back me up - most 390s easily hit 1100.

That is true, especially for an Msi card. 1100mhz+ with no additional voltage.

Anyway, I'd grab that 390 in a heartbeat since its cheaper than the 970. I see alot of overclocking talk. And load of BS. Neither cards will "overclock" till they "beat" anyone.

970 OC 1516mhz core

pf1BkdS.jpg

390 OC 1150mhz core

tTVLb65.jpg

So as you can see. They have the same performance. But why most peeps recommend the 390 is because its cheaper(mostly, unless stated otherwise)

If you're interested in efficiency - 970

If you're interested in longevity - 390 (I might get some flack for this but benchmarks online proves it, 290 and 290x are mostly beating the 780 in newer games.)

you won't has it's always been the case the 780 is a seriously cut down GK110 chip it has only 12/15 SMX units enabled and it has always been slower than the hawaii boards in many games except a few select nvidia optimised/sponsored titles... :) the 970 is quite a bit more capable than the 780 though.

It wasn't beaten or slower by much. It has always been getting pretty much the same performance as the 290x. Now, the 290x pulls so far ahead like its a different class.

no, i own one so i know...the GTX 780 has competed with the R9 290 in many titles, but fell short in many others as well..it has never competed with the R9 290X...this was 780ti's job and it has always slaughtered it in every games and it still does today.

AMD never had any cards to counter the 780 Ti. And that's why they have the r9 Fury X now. Wait 780 Ti slaughtering the 290x? Pretty sure its the opposite today.

the higher-end card from nvidia is always more expensive, but it always perform better...that's why they have the 980ti now.

Performance, good features, good performance per watt, being the fastest out there all the time unfortunately come at a cost, like everything in life son ;)

780 Ti and 290X power draw was 30W difference. Efficiency wasn't really an argument with Kepler.

1- it's more than that

2- even if it was 30W, it's still 30W for free has it still perform better in every way :)

But yeah i get your point, maxwell was a HUGE step forward in energy efficiency, that's true..

Not really - they just cut out half the capabilities of the GPU - it's compute potential is so piss poor a 580 beats a 980 when you want to do actual work.

And once you OC, which maxwell needs else it's performance isn't as good, power draw goes through the roof once more sooo yeah. Mostly smoke and mirrors :/

nvidia has never been blue either :)

ok enough now, i feel we could trow graphs at each other all day long but we have better things to do, and deep inside we BOTH know that nvidia is MUCH better than AMD who's rebranding the hawai boards that came out in 2013 and keep making it more beefy and power ungry gen after gen ;)
