ValvE pulls some Linux games from STEAM Store

Ticket to Ride, Anodyne, Lume, WAKFU, Starbound, Evoland, Oniken, StarMade and Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten have had their icons removed. I'm not sure what other games have seen the change, as that's a lot of games to go through to find out.

I spoke with the developer of StarMade who said this:

I spoke with other developers, but some are still looking into why, and some asked me not to mention them here.

It makes perfect sense, you wouldn't want a new SteamOS user to find out a game that advertised SteamOS support needed some outside launcher/installer for something like adobe air, or flash or anything else that needs a fair bit of manual interaction not directly possible in the SteamOS interface.

well, I guess it's a move - where it's the right or the wrong move, remains to be seen

but, I understand why ValvE is doing this - they want less hassle for the user; now only if the darn thing, Steam OS, actually becomes a true alternative to Windows gaming ... maybe the release of GLNext (Vulkan) API would cement it's position

starmade is actually an excellent example on whats going on.

the game is technically linux compatible - but its only so because they run on top of a layer that has to be installed seperately.

if for whatever reason that layer is not present - or has difficulty installing for whatever reason - the game is technically not compatible.

Makes sense, but it would be nice if they at least showed it that it is possible but requires user action and has no automated install or one that can fail.

i'm changing my APU setup to Linux (Ubuntu) to take a look at how Vulcan is gonna work...

Sad to see things go down this way... but meh, it is what it is

So does that mean they'll pull all Ubisoft and EA games next?  After all those also need extra nonsense (Uplay and Origin respectively) to work.

 

I know they don't make SteamOS-compatible games, but still would be nice if Valve could throw their weight behind that.

more bad news

 their controller is restricted to Big Picture Mode, i'm so happy i didn't buy in to it, this is the worse piece of hardware for PC gaming ever launched , how does one even do that....

 

for the people saying that Steam controller should work only with steam games : playstation and xbox controllers work on PC....

They should pull down Payday 2 from the store, or ban the devs from silencing people on the Steam forums.

PayDay2 is a pile of trash. The devs are sooo lazy. I is really fun to play and see all the glitches though

I have borked Ubuntu installations with GPU driver updates enough times (even strictly following the guides posted on Linux community forums) to have given up on that distro until 16.04. Fedora 22's been completely reliable. Also, Ubuntu Desktop doesn't let you natively install to a hard drive RAID 0, 5, 6, or 10. Fedora's got no issues on that.

If APU amd drivers are anything like GPU amd drivers that is a bad call. many less recent OpenGL games are borked for amd, and with linux openGL is really all you have for gaming.

I know what you mean with the driver updates though I found that only my GTX 970 had issues-my GTX 650ti 2GB never had driver issues once under Ubuntu. Oh and as for not being able to natively install Ubuntu to a RAid array. How come I was able to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Abit VP^'s Highpoint 370 raid controller with 4x 20GB HDD in RAID 0? (granted I had to update the drivers off the Highpoint ASAP website as the included driver would damage the array after a few reboots)

My 570 and R9 280X have both had 5 different driver installs completely ruin everything and force a fresh installation which even off of USB 3.0 takes a fairly long time. I tried recovery via the command line but something was always corrupted beyond repair. I nearly gave up on Linux. Fedora rescued me from hating Linux forever.

more bad news

their controller is restricted to Big Picture Mode, i'm so happy i didn't buy in to it, this is the worse piece of hardware for PC gaming ever launched , how does one even do that....

for the people saying that Steam controller should work only with steam games : playstation and xbox controllers work on PC....

It also works in, you know... games but who cares about that.

That might be a thing with AMD's drivers. When I tried to install the drivers for my laptop's Ati MR HD 5650 1GB (utilises the latest drivers still) and having a working distro after the installation was all down to luck. And its Ati MR 4250 (256MB dedicated) didn't work at all (that could be due to the laptop having a graphics configuration that is still unique).

Yeah, I might believe that if the GTX 570 hadn't also had 5 of its own failures. I'm actually mad Intel's not tossing GT3e/4e on Skylake desktop and is holding off until Kaby Lake or later. I'd have loved to get to the rock solid situation of using Intel's open source graphics drivers.

I never had a problem with the built in mesa gfx drivers on ubuntu with nvidia cards (580) but using the closed source drivers has always been an uphill battle.

Using "additional drivers" in Ubuntu isn't that hard........and using it only my GTX 650ti 2GB had no issues, with manual driver installation being needed for the HD5650 and GTX 970.

Yeah, I might believe that if the GTX 570 hadn't also had 5 of its own failures. I'm actually mad Intel's not tossing GT3e/4e on Skylake desktop and is holding off until Kaby Lake or later. I'd have loved to get to the rock solid situation of using Intel's open source graphics drivers.

well, atleast we KNOW that AMD has stated they are making a set of proper drivers for Linux... So i guess its in the pipeline.

I never had a problem with the built in mesa gfx drivers on ubuntu with nvidia cards (580) but using the closed source drivers has always been an uphill battle.

The built-ins are only OpenGL 2.x compliant, so as someone taking a graphics class, I need 3.x and higher to do all the programs.
