Summer homework

So my friend is going into grade 12 in the US and he recently built his PC and I want to game with him but he says he's busy all the time so I asked what he's been doing and he said he's doing summer homework and gave me a list of all the stuff he has to do:

 

- x3 3-5 page articles on separate parts of psychology

- An essay on art (no details)

- A FUCKING 20 page essay on science

- Read a book for English(800 pages)

- Finally 3 pieces of art

 

Is this even aloud? I live in a area full of people for lack of better description retards, so my school board has dumbed down work a lot. Basically that's the same amount of work in do in a year in my University level classes(grade 11&12). I feel bad for my friend like that's ridiculous its like having school 365 days a year with that much work to do over the summer. Whats your guys opinions on this? should kids be loaded with homework for over the summer, have a little or none at all?

Yes, in upper level high school classes work like this given over the summer is regular and assumed.

 

I call bullshit on 20 page paper on "science" though. A topic so broad makes that easily doable, but there is absolutely no goal in that and would be nothing but something designed to waste time. In HS my workload and work was harder than much of the stuff I'm doing at Uni right now, lol.

I never forget the time when I read Atlas Shrugged for an english class. That was probably the most tedious thing I have ever done.

 

But all of that homework seems excessive. In my opninion homework needs to reinforce teh stuff you learn in school, but this just seem likje school in it of it self

they need to find new ways of teaching. imean the world has been  changing and advancing in a massive rate but school, has stayed roughly the same throughout the entire 20th and 21st century

Well in my previous grades we often got a project or a bit of work to do. I mean personally I don't think homework is at all bad and if it's one of your more important or vital years, I think the work is needed.

That's still so broad that he's wasting time doing it. I don't think he's being serious on this one, this sounds like asking someone to write a 20 page (assumed double spaced) abridged bible. I really don't think any science teacher would assign a paper to babble about scientific topics. A few pages of problems out of the textbook is more likely.

Last summer I had two write a 4000 word essay, demonstrating the Zener effect in certain diodes, that was worth pretty much 0% of my mark. I could have easily written it in a solid work week.

 

I thought I did a terrible job, since I barely understood the subject material, but they gave me a mark that is somewhere between 80 and 89%.

true like diffrent classes give you HW on the same days then it turns out you have like a millions things do by the end of the week. then you dont know where to start and just dont even attempt it.

My thoughts exactly. a 20 page paper is almost nothing. I luckily only had to do like five of those in grade 12.

That really doesn't sound so bad. The only one that seems excessive is that 20 page paper, but even then that's easy enough to knock out in a week. If anything, it'll prepare him for the homework loads in higher education.

I'm just going to go ahead and call what you've listed a bunch of ..... - 20 pages at say 800 words a page is 16,000 words - that's thesis length. Same deal with the 5 page essays. 

thats a small thesis wind, some of my friends did theres last year and it was closer to 30K (for honors) and a PHD  is HEAPS more

 

but saying that when i was in school it wasn't a word limit it was page length , some students only did a 1000 words where as some of my papers where around the 3 - 4K both valid in high school

I remember getting assignments where it was "10 pages" it didn't make much word count as most of it was graphs and pictures and then you just discussed it add a introduction and conclusion bish bash bob your done
