Bought a 5080 but I'm unsure if I need to upgrade the CPU

Awesome thank you so much, will DM as soon as I'll get that new CPU. However I suspect that it'll be a early birthday gift for myself about next month or in 2 months. I'll make sure to message you about the bios though. Fucked that up once. Not risking that again.

Absolutely no problem.  I will be here in 1-2 months as well, just come back to this post so you remember me 😄

Thats a perfect birthday present!  I bought my self a pre-birthday present as well this month ( Sennheiser HDB 630)

Your motherboard supports BIOS Flashback with its Gigabyte Q-Flash feature, so updating the BIOS is very straight forwards, safer and somewhat foolproof-ish.  I have done quite a few updates on Gigabyte motherboards.

But I will assist you nontheless, we'll do it properly 🙂

Other details:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600x

RAM: DDR5 Corsair 64GB 6000MHZ

So I upgraded my graphics card from a 9070XT to a RTX 5080 16GB VRAM.

I might've been expecting too much from this upgrade, but I was hoping to be playing games like Subnautica 2 on Ultra with possibly raytracing with somewhat reasonable fps. Unfortunately, I tend to have 50-60fps, dipping down to 40fps whenever I activate any gadget light. I'm also playing on 2k resolution and 180hz so it'd be nice to reach that.

I haven't been too in touch with new hardware, so again I might just be overestimating the 5080s power.

So I'd like to know if it's just the graphics card hitting a limit or if it's actually the CPU limiting my fps.

I hope you got a good price for that 9070XT, that's a very minor upgrade.

You needed to upgrade your CPU before, too. Your CPU is likely to throttle first in many games, but not always

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's an early access UE5 game - ultra with RT on the best of the best was never going to net you 2k 180FPS, not even close. You probably can't even achieve that on 1080p with a 5090. I think the best you can hope for with any setup is a stable 60-80 on 2k Ultra for that game.

You're already pretty close to the best you can play that game at those settings.

Here is a 4 game average at 1440p Ultra settings, its a CPU/GPU scaling video by Hardware Unboxed.

The 7600X is still a very strong CPU and perfectly fine for a 5080, in most games, there will always be games that like a faster CPU.

I will link two videos you can watch about this below this screenshot.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I've bought the 9070 for pretty much 700€ flat. I've never had much of an Idea of how to compare AMD and Nvidia GPUs. I have a somewhat okay understanding of how powerful a Nvidia GPU will be, but when it comes to AMD I'll be absolutely clueless.

I have a friend that needs an upgrade for his GPU, so he agrees to buy the 9070 from me for 500€. Considering that money a budget for a new CPU, which one would you recommend? I have a B650 Aorus Elite AX motherboard. If possible I'd like to avoid buying a new motherboard. But let me know if it'll be a reasonable buy.

The only reasonable upgrade would be a 9800X3D or a 9850X3D.

I personally run an overclocked 9800X3D in my ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI.

Your B650 Aorus Elite AX will EASILY handle such a CPU, absolutely no problem at all.

Just update the BIOS and off you go 🙂

In some games I saw a decent uplift with a 9800X3D over my old 7700x but its not going to be a major difference in most games.

The best part is the 1% and 0.1% lows ( stutter ) but we can't fix unomptimzed games, no matter how much hardware we throw at it.

That being said, my 9800X3D paired with my overclocked RTX 4080 is a dream to game with.

Awesome, thanks a lot! I'll be looking to buy one of them. Hopefully that'll let me stay on my hardware for a couple years!

That was my plan as well, I didnt NEED to upgrade but I wanted the best of the best and in some games it actually did make a huge difference ( Hell Let Loose, Tiny Tina's Wonderland, and more ) and it some games it didn't matter at all. And now after moving to an even higher resolution than 1440p it makes less difference... But its nice knowing I have the best.

My plan is to buy a 6090 whenever that hits and pair it with my 9800X3D.

If you need any help updating the BIOS or setting up the CPU with some PBO, CO ( undervolt ) etc, you can send me a DM and I will help you ouy.
